How does PVP work?

Been have a go at PVP for a little while now and I'm starting to wonder if I'm very unlucky or if it's the same for everyone.

I seem to start off ok by facing characters of a similar level, (give or take a few levels if I have or haven't got the main special character). But then it seems to rocket up the levels to something monstrous. Highest I've seen so far is a 312 something Silver Surfer. It's safe to say I get smashed against OP opponents like that, lol.
Am I just unlucky? Or maybe I'm a too casual gamer? Or is this supposed to be like this? If so how am I supposed to get a chance at getting the decent rewards?

Interested to hear other people's experience with PVP

    What's your roster like?
    In general the matchmaking algorithm tries to match you against opponents at a relatively equal Power level (perhaps a bit stronger). This can get a bit wonky if you have some characters at a much higher level than the rest (i.e. fivestars on a twostar roster...).
