What is "causal hardcore?"

I've seen this game referred to as such, and as someone who has been hardcore about his fair share of games, I feel that this description is fitting. I have not, however, been able to pinpoint why. Can someone explain this to me?

They have a lot of features like lightning rounds and elite tourneys where it is great for pros. They also try to put out material ASAP and in abundance for us hardcore players.
However features like rubber banding helps people who are busy at work and can't play as often keep from falling to far behind the grinders. Also features like the MMR system helps newer players still be able to rank in regular pvp tourneys and not have months of nothing but catch up. They get tossed their none on occasion.0 -
I think it somewhat goes a little beyond that. There are just so many mechanics that the game uses that the vast majority of the players will never actually take much note of, and especially not plan around. Stuff like maximizing rubberbanding, knowing when all the refreshes occur, trying to keep scaling from growing too quickly, timing when you enter events, managing your MMR. That's all pretty hardcore stuff - even though it seems like common knowledge on the forum.
But, the majority of players are much more casual. They pick up the game while waiting in line or on public transport, play a few matches, see a bit of progression and go on their merry way.
The game is designed for both sets of players, though the forum focuses almost exclusively on hardcore playstyles.0 -

Agreed. I don't think it's really going beyond my point as much as just viewing it from a different perspective. There are definitely lots of ways that it can fit the casual / hardcore standard and you made a great point. It's a simple match 3 game. Just like candy crush bejeweled and all the casual matching games alike. But sooooo many extra mechanics and details and twists and turns for us more hardcore players.0 -

Casual hardcore, when you are too intense to be casual, but too hardcore to be normal. Or what those in the biz like to call "normal." Whoever came up with that term is a moron.0

It's similar to post-hardcore, metal-core, death-core and epic, symphonic black-death metal.0

A casual game that is played seriously?
Casual has become a kind of genre of it's own including things like match-3 and endless runners. I don't it's merely a game that can be played either casually or seriously. That can fit nearly any game, smash bros, halo, starcraft, etc.0
