Idea to fix PVE: Eliminate all ranking rewards

PVE used to be the highlight of he game. It was fun. It was interesting. It was kind of exciting. We'd see new levels, sometimes new opponents, and often the story would advance.

Lately, though, it's been tedious grinding. It gets boring really fast, and after a while you're fighting the same fight over and over again just to maintain your position. It's possibly the least fun thing you can do in the game. At least tanking is usually quick.

A lot of the problems stem from the developers insistence on implementing the scaling system. I'm not here to refight that battle, since they're apparently not giving up on it - I hate it, nearly everybody hates it, but we're probably stuck with it. If PVE lost the competitive aspect, however - if all prizes were moved to progression awards and mission rewards - that would at least remove the worst parts of the grind, when there are no rewards except not losing ground. I think PVE should have no PVP aspects to it anyway - a lot of us didn't realize this was a nearly 100% multiplayer game to begin with. And if the multiplayer was removed from PVE, people could have fixed goals to work towards, rather than amorphous placement to aim at, and I think it would be a lot more satisfying to a lot of the people who are frustrated right now.

Agreed. And very, very VERY much so!

Let's face it: a substantial amount of players voices again and again that they do not appreciate the ridiculous over-expressed competetive element that permeates the game and all the half-broken mechanics attached to it to keep it in a semi-maintainable state. Drop the competitive element from PvE and you can get rid of scaling, rubberbanding, etc. Basically everything people tend to complain about.

Here's some food for thought: Rather than giving them an e-sport to compete at, give them a game to play again.
  • Agree. The game isn't fun anymore. It just lost it.
  • I agree wholeheartedly. The pve events have become sooo tedious lately...

I would make one more suggestion though : we could make every event pretty much like "The Hulk" event (with no classement) with a reward that unlocks once the community has earned enough points ? that would give a coop element to it.

Anyhow I think getting rid of the competitive aspect of PVE events would make both pvp in tourneys and pve far more enjoyable than it currently is !
  • To play devil's advocate, nobody is forcing us to compete for the ranking rewards. You can just play until you have enough points for the progression reward you want and stop there.

Plus, the people that are pushing for the ranking rewards are increasing the rubberbanding for the other players. This helps everyone to get more points to get the progression rewards.

Actually that's not exactly true, since late pve events introduced new characters that were required in the most rewarding fights in the next pve event, you would want that character to get progression rewards in the next event (and they were only featured in the high ranking rewards not progression).

True. But having required characters in events is a separate issue. If they move all ranking rewards to progression rewards, they could make the progression rewards not attainable for you if you don't have all the required characters to get enough points. So you'd still be stuck with the same issue as before, except now you can't get new covers via progression rewards.

That's why I suggested to make a community based unlockable (which would be the new character, would have to complete three objectives troughout the event to unlock all three covers). Or you could put one cover of the new character in the mid range of progression and the two others at the end so that everyone has a shot to get at least one cover but "hard work" is still rewarded for OCD guys. There are probably other ways I'm not thinking of right now...

I'm not against PvP and ranking, in tourneys it's actually pretty fun and it works pretty well, but in events they are forced to use mechanics that makes the game less fun than it could be so that everyone has a shot, PvE should be just that, it shouldn't involve other players so much (at least not in a competitive way), there are enough tournaments for ranking junkies.

    @locked : I laughed at that icon_e_biggrin.gif
  • In theory that sounds good, and it would certainly increase my enjoyment of the game. icon_e_smile.gif But I don't know if it would hurt the developer's bottom line to give away covers more easily. I guess it's a delicate balancing act in F2P games to keep the paying, non-paying, and potentially paying players all happy.
  • I find the content of this thread... awesome. Yes, PvE should be more about players having fun and "recharcing their batteries" for PvP, not the same stressful crappo that PvP already provides.

Devs pretty please, with sugar on top, change the reward system for PvE so that progression rewards are either only rewards OR they are at least far better than ranking rewards.
  • Completely agree with this. If you get rid of ranking in PVE you can actually get rid of all the weird rubberbanding and scaling and everything. It would be much easier to set the progression rewards at expected levels if you beat x number of missions since everything would be a fixed value. You can still try to milk money out of people by making the highest progression rewards at difficult levels that you would need boosts or health packs to get, etc
  • I add my voice to that! Lightning rounds and at least one PVP-tournament running at ANY given time should be enough for the competetive players. Let us have some fun with community-based PvE-Events without any ranking. Or even include ranking without rubber and scaling, with rewards that aren't too bad to miss out on: A couple thousand ISO and/or about 100 HP and/or a 2** or 3** cover (NOT the new hero!!!!!!).
  • I agree and have been saying this since ages. PVE should be about a community effort. Heroes teaming up to defeat villains and not competing with each other.

I'm still hoping that someday they'll release a whole bunch of episodes as static playable missions no leaderboards or competition.
Just you all the time in the world and a lot of empty nodes!
Even if it ends up as DLC if the price is reasonable I'd probably buy it.
  • Now that the Alliance system leaked into PvE like so much ill-managed british-owned fossil-based product, This fix (along with others) is needed now.

    Yesterday.

    Last Week.

    MOVE.

(Give yourself 9 poins if you got the 1st reference, & 90 points if you got the 2nd reference.)

As someone who is in a successful alliance, I have to agree with this thread. The constant slogging through refresh after refresh is mind-numbing and going to burn people out. I placed first in both my sub-events, but have virtually no desire to compete in the next sub-events. The fact that my EASY sub-event is beginning with level 229s makes it even less attractive. In my hard sub-event, I have one battle with level 269 Wolverine -- and I haven't even unlocked any of the hidden nodes yet. The idea of having to do 5 or 6 clears of some of those nodes just so that I can score enough points to keep my alliance competitive with players who are fighting opponents who are far easier than mine is enough to make me want to toss the entire game away.

I like the competitive aspect of tournaments for PVP, but it would be fun to just be able to play the game to go through the progressions and win rewards for beating a set group of opponents.
  • i've gotta say, i thought this was a whine thread, but the case is well stated and i agree with it. pve is just too grindy right now. beating the same mission 3 times every 12 hours just seems kinda dumb to me. the rewards are drained well before it's over, they're generally not that hard, and i just don't know what beating the same set mission for the 14th time proves to anyone.

i do appreciate the 2.5 day subs vs the 24hour one though. with the banding, missing a reset isn't the end of world.
