Tanking:A necessary evil?

So i've seen alot of discussion about this, more so recently and i know there are some that approve and others that disapprove of this method. But is it really necessary?

I do myself before each pvp and will continue to do so. Otherwise i would never even get half the score i usually do. But is there a fix? How can the dev's make it better? I am slowly moving into the 3* and most of the time face guys with 141's on account of doing well in previous tournaments. But 141's?? I'm not even close to that level.

I can't see the dev's matching everyone against their counterparts either because how fun would that be. Your very 1st match against a trio of 141's would not a good game make. Is there any high level players that don't tank and if so, who do you get matched against during the early tourny stages?

I couldn't fight 3 level 141's over and over again. After 2 games id be out of healthpacks and would need to wait another 3 hours to play. I would get a total score of 27.

So how would you fix it and what would you like to see improved?

  • I'm not sure is the tl;dr answer.

    The longer answer:

I don't like the disconnect between your placement bracket and your MMR bracket.

Equally, I realise that if they were joined, and you only fought the people in your placement bracket then the guys with the best roster would have a huge advantage, and the noobs would be screwed.

My sense is that the MMR brackets aren't wide enough. Maybe 100-200 players max? But with shielding, that's not enough and you end up seeing the same opponents again and again.

I wonder if, as the game user base grows, the MMR brackets are widened? If not, they should be. There should only be, let's say, 10 MMR brackets. If you had a 100 players, you would have 10 in each. 1000 players = 100 to a bracket, and so on. That way, as the game expands and your bracket expands with you, you would find it becomes a more 'natural' home, with more chance of similar level opponents.

Another thing that needs to change is the volatility of your MMR ranking. I must have fought hundreds of PvP matches, and thousands of PvE matches. Tanking 6/8/10 matches should not have the drastic effect it does on your MMR. It points to something seriously wrong with the formula. I suspect MMR is only based on your last x number of matches.

It's possible, say, to ladder everyone based on their overall win / loss ratio each day, and base your MMR on that. You would need a roster factor (you might be 10 for 10, but be new and only have 1*s), and the total matches would need to be a factor to a point. (After 200 matches, it's probably irrelevant. You know how to play the game then.)
