Is there a list of character release dates somewhere?

Here's the order the 4*s were released in. I'm not sure about the Nick->Elektra era. You'd probably have to go through News and Announcements to find when everyone was introduced.

4* Thor was released after Devil Dinosaur but before Elektra - I think Devil Dino was released in October, Thor in November and Elektra in December 2014.
Nick Fury was weird since he was first awarded as a season reward for the top alliances, but I think his release PvE was in August 2014, possibly September.

Devil Dino was released in conjunction with the first anniversary. He was available in anniversary tokens you got each day/won from PVP and lightning rounds. Thor was available in-game at the same time, but only in the form of a loaner for lightning rounds during the anniversary so we could preview her. She wasn't available to win until the events after the first anniversary wrapped up.

Elektra came a bit later as the leading edge of the ramp-up in 4* releases.

Anniversary in October, Devil Dino released.
Second run of Meet Rocket and Groot in November (right after the first), Thor is released.
Just before first run of Enemy of the State during Christmas 2014, Elektra is released (and is essential in first EoTS run).
In case I need to make myself more clear...

I wasn't contradicting you, just expounding on Devil Dino and Thor part of what you said (since Thor's release was done a little differently to promote the new comic at the time) for the benefit of anyone who wasn't playing at the time.

(Technically, Devil Dino was added in December 2013 the first time The Hunt ran, though he was non-recruitable and only had one power. But I can't recall if he was classified as a in that incarnation.)

I think he was a threestar at that time. I am certain his strong colors were green, Red and black (not necessarily in that order).
