Thoughts on General Tazri?

We know this is the first Mythic Offer we're going to be seeing from the Gatewatch set, and I'm trying to figure out if she'll be worth the money. I'm assuming $30, if previous prices are any indication.

So she's a 4/4 for 20 mana, with Activate 5 to give all Creatures +1/1, and she fetches an ally from your library when played, and that Ally costs nothing.

I don't think Ally Gideon has the mana gain to play her fast enough to be worth it, and Ally Gideon lists also typically run lower-cost allies, making the odds that you'll get a large discount on the free Ally lower.

Which leaves running an Ally-heavy Ajani deck. The issue with doing that is that you would likely have to give up ramp/cascade creatures like Volcanic Rambler and Abbot of Keral Keep to make room for Tazri, but the tradeoff would be that you're basically guaranteed to summon a free Ally of the powerful variety when Tazri hits the field.

So, what do you all think? And thanks for chiming in, if you do!

3 creature slot syndrome hurts this game badly. I would say Ajani with Noyan Dar and the Goblin that pumps guys up. With Noyan costing 18 now, casting him for free is real nice.

well, 20 mana for g2 is too much. the increase of veteran warleader's mana cost to 15 already slows the qb speed down quite significantly. its just 4/4... and needs to take some time to buff up. my take is its more like an enhancer to the creatures already on the board but not a game changer.

I don't want to be the "dies to removal guy", but it dies to removal.

There's a lot of good, cheap removal running around the format right now. Black can kill her for as little as 5 (or discard it from your hand while you're still powering it up for 3). Red can kill her for as little as 6. Blue can bounce it for 4. White can whack her for 8 (or disable it and then whack it for even less). Any color can Scour from Existence for 12 (which is a lot more effective now that the AI uses it on opponent's creatures instead of its own).

Since the last update, I've retooled all of my decks and no longer run anything over 12 mana. You want to kill my creature, fine. But I'm going to throw down another one, and I'm going to do it for 2 gem matches or less.

With white, you have so many good, impactful options for so much less mana. Lantern Scout costs 5. Serene Steward costs 6. Those are the sorts of cards that let you hit the gate swinging, and also allow you to recover when your board gets whacked.

At first glance she does not look very impressive.... a 4/4 for 20 mana?
But with activate 5 each turn you can beef up all of your creatures on board very fast.... potentially a lot faster than Drana

And even though She is an Ally (i assume its a woman?) The first ability alone is good enough so you dont have to play an ally heavy deck to benefit from.

Ally Gideon can play her in 4 turns. And even if he had 6 mana gain from white matches it still would need 4 matches to gain enough mana

    Yeah, General Tazri is female.

Its not that clear to me how she is supposed to work.

When she draws the free ally, do you automatically play it whether you want to or not? I can't imagine it working this way, because she is an ally herself, you'd get stuck in an infinite loop of her growing on the turn you play her if she were the only ally in your deck.

So lets assume you get to play it for free the following turn: She's amazing.

If they remove her, you just play her for free the next turn and get another free copy. If they don't remove her she grows by 4/4 each turn instead*.

And she gets an activate +1/1 times 5. Now I don't know how *all* activates work, but I know how Lavastep Raider works, and his activates will stack if you hit them both. So she could potentially be growing your entire half of the board by 5/5 each turn on top of her own 4/4 growth.

So I'd say she's pretty decent.

*Assuming she is the only ally you run.

    *cough cough*
Tazri description states: "fetch the fist ally creature other than itself from the library.

    General Tazri
    Deck: Oath of the Gatewatch
    Type: Creature
    Rarity: Mythic

*Not Yet Available in the Boosters

When this creature enters the battlefield, Fetch the first Ally creature in your library. It is free.
Activate 5: Each creature you control gains +1/+1.

Taken from the mouseover of row 4 column 3 of the cards on https://d3go.com/mtgpq-card-list-oath-of-the-gatewatch/
    Matches the image as well.

Where are you seeing the description that precludes it from drawing itself (making it not very good, like Angelic Captain, a bad card whose text is likewise misleading)?

I couldn't find another thread dedicated to this card that specified "this card is not worth buying", though I'm sure one will come out when they are attempting to sell her for $14.99.

Yeah probably they changed midway and uploaded on the site an older version.
In game states "other than itself"
Anyways the card can have some uses for the moment cause there are not so many allies worth a lot at the moment.
Lantern scout is rare, veteran warleader mythic so this are not easy to get.
When they will release the oath of Gideon this will change.
In game also all oaths are marked as "event reward". That will make oath accessible to all player.
With oath and a couple decent allies the deck will work fine so no room for the poor lady general.

The official card archive referenced is not well maintained and has many errors.

From the card list in the game itself:

Notice the "Show all cards" checkbox at the bottom.
