5* Viability

What is the general consensus on 5* feasibility these days, when does it become worthwhile to level & use them?

I currently have
2/0/1 Phoenix
0/2/1 Silver Surfer
2/0/1 Old Man Logan
0/1/1 Green Goblin
0/1/1 Spider-Man Black
1/0/0 First Avenger
0/0/0 Iron Man 46

All unleveled. I play PvP primarily, as PvE is not at all worth the effort. I'm on day 922, so despite the relative weakness of my roster, I regularly see 400+ 5* characters once I'm past about 600 in PvP. Had I even a single yellow OML cover, I'd probably dump ISO into him, but i'm dubious about his effectiveness at his current cover state.

Is Phoenix worth bringing up to 300? Is GG worth bringing to 285? I've been using the goblin in Nefarious foes and he's entertaining but SLOOOOOOOOW. Spider-man doesn't seem worthwhile with only a 14AP power. Surfer is basically in the same state as OML: I don't have the marquee power that would make him viable.

I use IM all the time. I have house party and girl Friday but I really only use girl Friday. It's a beast of a power especially with 2* Magneto. My third is champed 3* Thor at 3/5/5 and I use his yellow over house party 90% of the time.

With the right covers and team, they are viable early.

Edit- I had a 2 cover cap I brought to 285 and I sold him because of scaling issues. Unless you are well in to 4*, don't level them that high.

Unfortunately none of those 5*s will be better than a 4* in their current state. When you eventually pull that yellow OML then I would say he's borderline usable (but don't expect him to scare anyone off).

Here is my personal thoughts on when 5*s become viable to put iso into them (Generally, I feel that you should have 1 of each color):

Phoenix - 8 covers, at least a couple purple.

Silver Surfer - 10 covers minimum. I wouldn't level him before another 5*.
Old Man Logan - 5 covers, at least 1 yellow.
Green Goblin - maybe 8 covers? Not much experience with him.
    Spider-Man Black - 10 covers?
First Avenger - Guessing 8-9 covers
Iron Man 46 - I've heard he's better than all but maybe OML. So maybe 6-7 covers

Any less than these and you are probably scewing your MMR/scaling unnecessarily.

You say your roster is relatively weak. Are these lvl 255s your highest characters? How high are your highest 4s and 3s?

Relative to other people at day 922, I'm pretty sure it is. My highest character is a 276 HBIM, followed by 270 XF, Goddess, and... Electra (don't ask), all champed. The RNG loathes me as my other fully covered 4*s are Ant-Man, IW, Fury and ProfX (just covered a few days ago). I'm two green covers shy of being able to max TeenJean, and two covers (of any color, thankfully) from being able to cover max X-23. Rulk is 0/2/4 (insert weeping emoticon here) and Ice Man is 1/4/4. LTs have been giving me a LOT of Chulk and Mr Fantastic lately, so they'll probably be cover maxed soon. Yay?

Assuming none of my 5*s are worth investment, I'll probably bring ProfX up next for climbing (though I'm somewhat loathe to do so, I *love* seeing Prof/Switch/BWGS teams while I'm on my climb).

All of my 3*s are champed. I'm definitely in the 4* phase, but given the age of my account I fairly regularly run into 400+ OMLs.

That's kinda what I was assuming, thanks for the feedback.

Not a bad list list all. I have no usable 5*s, so taken my advice with a grain of salt, but here are some suggested revisions.

Phoenix: she becomes usable at 4 purple covers. The other powers are nice, but cascades and resulting critical do massive damage at the 5* tier. She needs her purple to be effective to work.

OML: I think he is usable for clearing out easy and mid tier pve nodes as low as 1/1/0. But for pvp scaling purposes I wouldn't want him as the highest level character on my roster without your suggested 5 covers, at least 1 yellow.

5*Cap: not sure exactly how many covers he needs. But they should be slanted towards red and blue. His yellow sucks.

GG is very powerful. I would think that he is actually a functional support character as early as 1 purple and 1 yellow cover (ap theft and tile fortification are powerful tools), but he likely needs 7-8 covers (including a few black) to become a frontline offensive character.

And between varying rates of play (and spending....) you can't tie roster to days played.

Well, except that account age is one of the factors used to determine what kind of bracket a person falls into. I'm not at all ashamed of my roster, and your advice is basically what I'd resigned myself to doing. I just thought I'd check to see if any of those 5*s were at all worth the trouble.

Well that's a great roster! And between varying rates of play (and spending....) you can't tie roster to days played. And way back in the day Elektra was one of very few 4*s, not so uncommon for a vet to have her maxed. Every champed 4 pumps out great rewards.

With all 3s done and 4s underway then I'm afraid the best answer is ... IMO ... save iso and consider hoarding LTs. Also think about cycling 2*s if literally saving iso is too dull. Target needed fixed rewards. Champ next key 4* that gets covered. Get a 100 or more pulls piled up, then have a party.

I know that's not exciting advice, but if you can stomach it, it will pay off down the road.

I concur with aesth's advice. And I would also caution you against breaking your Winfinite combo by leveling up prof x too high.
