Disproportionate roster making for unbalanced matches.

I have a Thor maxed out at 85. The rest of my roster caps out at 60. Unfortunately I find myself constantly going up against 3x 85 teams or 2x85 plus whatever featured character they are running at the time. If I sell my Thor, will the matchmaker even me out or is it too late for me?

  • It won't help.

Your matches are chosen based on a hidden "mmr" rating. This rating increases when you win, and drops when you lose battles. Basically, you've been winning your matches enough to land yourself facing such levels. If you want to loser this rating, you need to "tank" your mmr - lose matches repeatedly, either by manually losing matches, or winning a match with a roster people would love to eat up. The last team you win a match with is what opponents will see, so if you can advertise the weakest team you have that can win a match, you'll make yourself a tasty target.
  • So basically, bench Thor and tank my score. Bummer.
  • People often use the Lightning rounds during the week to tank score. You can also tank your score by getting to 300 in any regular tournament, and once there set up your tank team. You lose less points per match lost up to 300, so it's easy to recoup.
  • Alternatively you can tank in the SHIELD training "tournament". Go in with your garbage roster, surrender, repeat until you get tired of it. After a while go back into the tournament you want to place well in, skip your current list of opponents and you should have lower level opponents. The downside to this is these new targets might not be worth very many points.

I was in your position not that long ago. It's definitely the least fun phase of the game. Keep at it and eventually you'll get two or three level 85's and you can compete again.

No one said bench Thor, the level of your roster has zero effect.
  • I think they should focus on team levels and current event score in matchmaking algorithm. Mmr could be third factor in succession of the two. Tanking is such a chore.

Roster level as priority, with 3-6 highest characters as indication. And if no similar level opponent is available, slightly higher preferred and after that slightly lower. Add event score factor so you aren't fighting 5 point matches constantly.

And what they should do with pve also, higher level opponents yield more points, at least some

Yeah, you're supposed to lose a lot to get lower opponents, your roster or play style has nothing to do with MMR. Figure out some way to collect losses without losing anything of interest. Or find another game with less braindead tournament design.

I mentioned this the other day, but I'm wondering how we (the forums) know that the level of the roster has zero effect. Back during Oscorp I pumped the massive load of ISO I'd gotten into my team and immediately and abruptly got matched with mostly much-higher level teams [who were closer to my "new" level] than I'd seen previously in PVPs, despite no real difference in my PVP performance. (And I still rarely see teams with levels over 100 even though I've been finishing top 20 in most PVPs for a while) Could be coincidence but I haven't seen Ice or Will say anywhere that roster composition or level is definitely not a factor in determining your matches?

The level of your current characters and roster have zero effect. It's all performance based.

Theoretically, MMR should balance out Roster Level. Being the player, you will be smarter than the AI and be able to win mismatches. This brings your MMR up and you will be matched up against higher level teams until you are overwhelmed and can't progress.

However, now, your MMR is such that you are visible to those overwhelming teams and they will pummel you into oblivion until your MMR is knocked back down to a manageable level. As well, there may be lower level teams able to attack your team (since players should be smarter than AI) and knock you back down even further.

This relationship between attack and defense SHOULD ensure that you are getting more or less fair matches frequently. It's been working OK for me; I've had some overwhelmingly impossible matches and some pitifully easy ones, but the majority of my matches have been pretty fair

    Haha, thanks! icon_lol.gif
  • I don't mind having challenging matches, the problem is that if I keep playing hard my mmr keeps climbing and eventually I have to constantly keep fighting significantly higher level teams, basically forcing me to either quit playing or tank. Thus my idea of priority over slightly higher level teams and team levels would correlate points gained. That way I could keep playing without the need to tank.

And players at my level would get similar points and higher roster players get higher points. Points gained total: how much and how well you play
  • By bench Thor, I'm meaning to take losses I shouldn't be throwing out my one best hero in every match. I understand that my roster level has no bearing. However, smashing opponents with my high level charade will raise my mmr. And the less I play him the more likely I am to lose and get more balanced matches.
