A couple things I haven't seen mentioned yet:

This "subscription" service is being added as Apple is introducing a model that lets developers keep 85% of revenue for long-term subscriptions instead of the normal 70%. Since MPQ has such a dedicated player base, this seems like a no brainer for D3, even if no one starts spending more. Good call.

The other bit of non mpq news that helps this make sense is the success of the Humble Monthly Bundle program. Humble Bundles have been making bank for a long time, but with understandably high variance across bundles. But it seems like the monthly program has been stable enough that Humble has been able to start paying funding development on smallish original games. Predictable cash flow can potentially mean more development resources.

Obviously I don't know if either of these reflect D3's plans, but it seems like a more interesting topic than endlessly repeating a variant of "this is/isn't enough for me to justify spending $10." Are there any other angles I'm missing? Thoughts about what we might expect if I'm right or wrong?

I don't think this counts as a "subscription" though. It functions like one, but it doesn't automatically charge you for the next month when the first one runs out, so it's really just a purchase that lasts a month(ish).

I think it's just to rope in low spenders and non-spenders. It will work. Those purple tokens are too shiny to pass up, even if they are fools gold.
