Why Can't I Retreat?

Why can't I retreat at any time during a battle? I should be able to retreat at any time and not have to watch my team get the **** beat out of it while I'm stunned for multiple turns or whatever. I'd like to say that there is nothing more frustrating, but with this game, there almost certainly is. This is right up there though. Please fix this.

    What's interesting about it is you can't retreat because your team is already dead. I had it happen earlier and the power that killed my character didn't get enough AP until 3 turns after the stun. How did the computer know I would be dead in 3 turns from a power the AI didn't have until then?

    The computer processes everything that happens in its turn(s) instantly -- everything after the first fraction of a second is just animating it.

    If you're playing on an Android device, switching off the application and back again will bring up the Options/Retreat dialog no matter what's going on at the moment.
