The Real Children of the Atom

Magneto is buffed for the X-Men PvP. That's not so weird, he's been affiliated with them and the 2* variant is categorised as a Hero to represent his changing allegiances (particularly following the most recent visit by the Phoenix Force).

But 3* Magneto is also buffed. That's 3* Villain Magneto.
The only other outlier on the list is Deadpool, who is a mutant but not specifically a member of the X-Men in either of his variants (I'm splitting hairs on the definition of X-Force, but I assume the argument is that only members of the X-Men are buffed).

I understand that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are based on MCU definitions, so they're not mutants. But why aren't Mystique and Daken buffed? They're just as much "Children of the Atom" as anyone else, and Mystique has also been a member of the X-Men for a time!

And while I'm at it, how about that Children of the Atom token page? Featuring everyone's favourite mutants: Vision, Iron Fist, Gamora, Hulk, Kamala Khan, Moonstone, and Luke Cage. What a mess!

I've stopped worrying too much about these theme event buff lists a while ago. None of them make sense. Avengers not getting buffed for the Avengers event, non-villains getting buffed for the villain event. It's a mess.

isn't 'children of the atom' often used an epithet for mutants in marvel continuity?

magneto and deadpool may not be x-men, but they are definitely mutants (at least until Marvel Studios decides they want those characters in MCU movies too and ret-cons them a la Switch and QS).
  • Well technically deadpool is a mutate but he should be buffed since he is a part of the x books

Yeah, maybe I wasn't clear. I'll try to clarify:

    1. If Children of the Atom is being used as an epithet for mutants and not just the X-Men, then surely Mystique and Daken should also be buffed alongside Magneto.

    2. However the description of the event (as well as the announcement, "To Me, My X-Men") appear to refer to only the X-Men - presumably this is the way in which MPQ can best leverage interest out of Apocalypse. But wait a moment, only one of the Magneto variants is a member of the X-Men and has hero affiliation; the other is a villain. If we're allowing variants based on team membership at "some point" in their career, then we definitely need to include Mystique who has also been a fully fledged member of the X-Men.

2b. If, in fact, the event is purely designed to showcase the "X-Men" then it would stand to reason that spin off variants should also not be included. So X-Force Wolverine and both Deadpools are out (yes, I'm aware that Deadpool is a mutant). I think all other X-characters are some kind of X-Men (Uncanny, Astonishing, Amazing, All-New, etc.)

    3. The absence of a mutant or X-Men/Brotherhood affiliations makes it really difficult to judge the selection criteria.

    4. It's possible that Children of the Atom refers to a specific story - in the same way as the Black Vortex PvP event. As far as I can tell, there is a CotA comic which is a retelling of the original X-Men origin story (this would suggest that PX, Jean Grey, Cyke, Beast, Iceman, and Angel are the only boosted characters). There was also the old Capcom fighting game which uses the same name - if, for some reason, the event is based off this instead, then the boosted character list would be Colossus, Cyke, Iceman, Psylocke, Storm, Wolverine, Magneto, and Juggernaut - with Spiral, Silver Samurai, Sentinel, and Omega Red all currently missing from MPQ.

4b. Perhaps it's in reference to the relatively recent Battle of the Atom story, which features just a whole bunch of mutants. The current buff list would mostly be accurate, although x-23, OML/XFW, and 3* Mags would still need to be dropped - I think arguably everyone else is there.

    green goblin is a 5*.

according to that logic, they could bring in liu kang and give him a xmen-boost.

get over it, no logic in power, no logic in boosts.

I still like to think about the intern who throws darts against a wall to determine new characters and their respective tiers. oh, and boosts.
