My Versus Woes

So I am now on day 302 (****… almost a year in already ) and I have a solid 3* roster (sans and there covers are sooooo elusive), I have a usable 2/5/5 at level 180 and a couple more 4*’s nearly there.
This being said I have real difficulty with Versus climbing any higher than 800 and that’s a struggle. Judging from my roster I would say that I’m in a position where the 1k 4* reward should be attainable with a little effort. Should I be hitting that 1k now regularly or is this reward there for already established 4* rosters to fill in their gaps?
I have only ever shield hopped (or tried to) once, and that was a complete waste of 225 , each time I dropped shield I was battered by 100+ points within the first match of breaking both shields. Granted at the 800ish mark I’m probably quite a juicy target for climbing 4* teams, but this left a bad taste in my mouth regarding shielding.
I’m predominantly a Story Mode player and as such the Versus element of the game has always been a mode I hit when I have spare so I’ve never really scheduled my time there. I have heard of people climbing to 1k in under an hour, but it takes me that long to get to 500.
So, I’m looking for a little advice from anyone in the know, should I be even attempting 1k in Versus yet? If so, is it best to attack all the way to 1k in one sitting, or shield hop my way there (I’m really dubious about spending HP in this manner) 1 match at a time with crossed fingers and toes?

I'm at day 440ish and I can say that hitting 1k has become much harder the last 2 seasons without serious shileding, I've been settling for 800 most events, and I have 2 champed 4*s. 2 seasons ago I hit 1k nearly every time. I guess it's the new matchmaking that's hurting me.
You'll be told that alliance co-ordination and shield hopping are key, but you still need a good amount of shields.0 -

All of this. I have several good champed 4*'s and my float point has gone from around 750 three seasons ago to maybe 600 this season - something that sounds very common for primarily 4* rosters according to the other PVP threads currently out there.
I cannot stress outside communication enough - even though D3 long ago said they don't want you to have to have it, it is very VERY helpful (almost necessary) to get a high score.
I don't think it's the MMR - I think it may just be that there are so many 5*'s out there now. The biggest problem is 5*'s still exist in PVP's that require 3*'s....they should have been separated out as soon as 5*'s were released!0 -

They might've eaten a few cup cakes along the way or co-ordinate with other players, but currently I don't think we'd be able to get to 1000 by genuinely beating other 3*s teams anymore.SnowcaTT wrote:I cannot stress outside communication enough - even though D3 long ago said they don't want you to have to have it, it is very VERY helpful (almost necessary) to get a high score.0

I tend to use slice 1 and 3 as well, they are definitely not the worst from a Points perspective. If you want to climb high you need to shield and queue up good targets while shielded.0

if your goal really is 1000 and eventually 1300, nothing will help you more than leveling your OML and your rulk. 330-345 OML and 250 rulk will make 1K kinda trivial and bring 1300 into play. too bad you missed this week of rulk boosted. leveling rulk will do nothing to your pve scaling since you have so many 5*s and while leveling OML will affect it some, you'll have an incredible tool to deal with it. I'm not primarily a pve player, so I come more from a pvp point of view, but I'd have leveled that OML as soon as I got 1/1/1. and you can get yours to 345.0

I was in almost exactly your position a few weeks back. I leveled OML to 345 and maxed out my 1/5/5 rhulk, and pvp got much, much easier. With those two and rhulk boosted, hitting 1000 should be easy. You'll float higher, and should be able to push over 900 without shielding. From there, one shield hop (use boosts) can take you over 1000.0

If you don't do major shielding it is very difficult. Even on day 515+ with a developed 3* roster, I have a very difficult time doing it unless I really put all of my effort into it. My problem is that I don't earn enough HP to pay for all of the shields I would need so I only do it once every so often. I also have always liked PvE better so that is another reason I rarely make the 1000 point reward.
As noted above by the other poster, you have OML so use him and level him. He is all you basically need in this game anymore unfortunately.0
