You don't join a main bracket until you select an end time. The amount of people in your bracket should be in a red band above the black band that states how much time is left in the event. It is easiest to just check the last post in the thread, to see what the latest info someone has provided. If the time zone settings in your user profile are correct, you should be able view the time the person posted, to see how current their info is. There is a possibility of multiple brackets filling side by side, so join a "fresh" bracket at your own risk.

1)Time slice you are in
2)Current amount of people in bracket
3)Leader in bracket with amount of points
4)Time you joined the event, if it was not right before posting in the thread.

Wow, do I feel like I joined the wrong bracket for this event.

I typically play in slice 4, and join about 12-16 hours after each event starts, whenever a fresh bracket opens up. Today I thought I'd try slice 2 to see if it was any less competitive.

I joined a fresh slice 2 bracket when it started about 3p EST, did a full clear and that put me in 11th place. It's 7 hours later, not yet enough time for a full refresh (and for people to start doing their second clears), and I'm in 205th place. Part of that is obviously due to rubberbanding, but ultimately that means over 200 people have done at least one full clear in this bracket, and we're only at 743 people so far.

I joined this event a little earlier than usual because max progression is at 59k, which feels a little high for a 3 day event, so I didn't want to mess around. But I'm used to placing top 50 in most events and now I'm wondering where I'll wind up in this one.

Is there any conventional wisdom on the different slices, which ones are generally agreed upon to be most or least competitive?

S2 is pretty ok. There's probably a lot doing early grinds. After 3 full clears the field should settle down.
