So there's only one thing I'm unclear on. It's the whole alliance choosing a side bit. Does every alliance member have to play the same side as a team? The rules said something about only the first 20 members of an alliance can be on a side, and something about being put on a different leader board? Uh what's that all about? So can I choose whatever side I want? If most of my alliance chooses one team, does that mean I am trying to get all the points by myself? Or will I be added to a random group with other non alliance players?
D3 has done a very poor job of specifically explaining this new and confusing event mechanic :-\

You can play different sides. Since you get locked into the alliance scoreboard when you join the event it's possible that more than 20 players try to join for one alliance, in which case the first 20 to join get one scoreboard while number 21, 22 etc get another.
And Yes, playing "The other side" means you'll need to get all the points for yourself... But you still get the rewards your teammates earn.

theres only a finite amount of points that can be earned, ie. you only get so many boss fights total per day in the event. you can have people in your alliance doing a different boss, but the alliance will have a much harder time reaching the upper alliance progression awards. the best thing to do is have all 20 hit one boss until you complete (hopefully) round 8, adn then everyone switch over and hit the other boss for as many awards as can be reached. splitting your efforts will impair your ability to hit the highest progression awards.

I was going to post a new topic on this, but maybe I'll just tack it on here:

Let's say you have an alliance that isn't super hardcore, but active enough to get through round 5 and maybe round 6. Is there any logic to, after completing round 5 or 6, if you think the next reward is totally out of reach, switching sides and trying to complete rounds 1-4 for the other team? Are there any threads here discussing that strategy?

that will be a judgment call for your alliance to make. it seems completely reasonable whenever you've maxed out your potential on one side, whether that is 1) finishing, 2) hitting a level where you can't reliable win, or 3) hit a time crunch where it is mathematically not possible to finish that round; to flip to the other side and finish as many rounds there as possible, maximizing your rewards.
