It's fun to see people say "Just increase server capacity!" as if
    1) D3 didn't already know that
    2) It was literally that easy to do.

Like, until you came around D3 was just rolling their head back and forth on the keyboard trying to think of a solution.

"Wait! Guys! Someone on the message board came up with this awesome idea! Why don't we...increase the server capacity!"
    (And there was much rejoicing)

Thing is, servers cost money. Not just money to buy, but to maintain and keep updated. Having "too many" for 98% of the year to cope with the 2% of times that show an increase in traffic is not at all cost effective. So instead you make do and brace yourself and then give out free Moonstone tokens afterwards =)

It seems like they should work on transitioning to cloud, say AWS or Azure. Spin up or spin down as necessary. Let a bigger company worry about maintaining all those servers, while you only pay for what you use.

For much hyped marquee events like this cost should not be an issue. D3Go is started to get a much maligned reputation and a good reputation is something that money can't buy, being locked out if events combined with a sub par customers service then mixed with a known stinginess when "things go awry" and that is a very bad recipe. More server space for an online only game should be classed as an investment for the future.

These events don't just occur overnight and looking at previous performances the upper management should approach their parent company Sega and request additional funding for server capacity if they are unable to secure that then they need to go back to Marvel and say sorry but they are unable to host the event as it would not be fair to their customers to potentially be locked out of it for a day or two. I also play Contest of Champions, Future Fight and Avengers Alliance 2 and I can 99% be sure I won't have any issues logging into those games and on the small chance that for them anything "goes awry" the players will be very generously compensated.

Remember these events are heavily advertised across all form of digital media to bring in more new players, if as a new player I download and open an app and I get nothing but connection issues then it gets uninstalled quick smart.

TL;dr yes it is simply a case of ensuring there is more than enough server capacity.
