poll: new characters yay or nay?

So a while back (just after venom release) I decided i was not going to keep new characters unless I really liked them if it meant buying a roster spot.
This is mostly because I'm fed up of buying two a month to try and accomodate more.

I used to be a huge advocate for 500 HP roster slots...but that was when you could use HP to buy covers. Now I don't see it as such a big deal, and it's pretty easy to keep up and slowly get ahead. I've been adding 2*'s back onto my roster (after selling all but four). I can still see this being a big problem for new players - likely an intentional problem so the new players spend a little and get into that habit. I voted pokemon complex - I guess that's where I fall?
I could have said "never went after them" - the problem I have isn't characters, it is the life/time sucking devil called PVE. I've not tried to get them in PVE for a long time.
"Nay" on new characters, it's boring to have nothing but new characters over and over - diluting the pool to get any of them, while bringing little to nothing "new" into the game.0 -
i despise new characters. all variations on a theme. i play pve for these stupid things because of my alliance and i also simply hate not having essentials and maybe having missing a shot at 4* ddq. hp is for roster slots for me anyway so when i get low it only keeps me from buying daily deals in juicy vaults.
with the cap movie coming were going to get drowned in new characters, so its going to get worse not better.0 -
I play both PVE and PVP so my HP supply has been fine for a while now so the roster cost does not bother me. The amount of HP from championing 2&3* makes up for the roster cost. ISO is the biggest issue in the game for me. I mainly play for the progression rewards and every other week I try and place in PVE. New character releases are the only placement reward I even go for anymore. I am now sad admitting that.0

I'll try and get them all, but I'll pick and choose when to chase them. I'll normally try a bracket snipe, and if that fails, try for the PVP 1000 point award, which has been relatively easy the last few times. The big chase from early out in PVE just sucks, and I don't play competitive in it normally, so not having the character for the next one isn't that big an issue for me.0

I'm a big fan of new characters.
It's the only thing that keeps that gives this game it's longevitiy. I'm probably one of the only players out there who feels that 5* characters in particular are being released too slowly. 5* tier of play desperately needs some additional variety.
My only issue with new characters is the flow of resources doesn't keep up with them at all. If ISO was doubled then I'd like to think players would be a bit more accepting of the two week release schedule.
Likewise I'm fine with more 5*'s under the condition that D3 continue the 3 pack system they've started. This allows players to target what characters they want to build towards without diluting the odds. With the 3 pack system in place I could care less if there were 9, 12, or 15 5*'s in the game. It's just more choices to SLOWLY build towards that are never mandatory for events.0 -
Since the release of champions, HPs are really not a problem anymore (as a free player i even spent some of them for tokens).
What annoys me is the fact only new characters are added- no new features, only the old ones again and again.
Also, ISO8 is a huge issue- with every 4* character you need more and more ISO to max your chars. Its impossible to get enough ISO to make your characters useful, or at least comparable to 5* covers on their default level.0 -
I've decided probably around that same time as the OP that I'm not going to stress out about getting the shiny new toy. Especially since I don't whale on them, so what good does a super under covered character do for me? Nothing. I play PvE the same whether it is for a new character or not. That said I will probably try pretty hard for Winter Soldier if his specs are good.
In conclusion: This game has sucked me in, but I'm not going to do the endless hamster wheel that is PvE until my thumbs become callused and I have arthritis.0 -
Nay unless the new character is a 3 star since those are the only ones I can build into a usuable status. Since 3's are no longer released, nay was my vote.0

I voted for the Pokemon mindset but on actually thinking about it I realized I'm actually really kind of selective as to what characters I go after. 4* still being something of a pipe-dream I only really go after characters if they are characters I like because I never really expect to get very far getting them to a point where they will be usable (most of my 4*s are still as 3-4 covers), maybe sometimes I'll go after 4*s that are strong too but usually just as an afterthought if I find it to be convenient.0

I get them all. I also feel a slight obligation to roster all the new characters before their DDQ4 so I can keep my guide up to date. Emphasis on "slight," as I haven't missed earning a 4* release since ProfX.0
-
I voted the first option, but it's misleading in my case. I get all the new releases by default. I kicked the competitive PvE habit long ago and never looked back. However I am among the masses that need the Iso from PvE badly and generally grind every node 7/7. So I usually end up somewhere in the top 50/100 just from that. Were it not for the constant Iso-drought I wouldn't play PvE at all.
I haven't cared about a new release since...umm...a really long time ago. If a new character isn't at the very least as good as Hulkbuster, I couldn't care less about them; just a quasi-loaner for the next round of essentials. I really wish more energy was put into creating different ways that we play the game rather than a never-ending stream of generally unimpressive characters that are constantly weighed against the current top 5.0 -
My vote goes for the last option, but it is not really Pokemon syndrome. I work to roster new characters for two reasons:
1. I would like to play their essentials because every little bit of CP helps.
2. As a 4* transition player, every cover for a 4* character to get a foothold into the terrain helps.
Diluting the 4* pulls is painful for rosters that struggle to get into the 4* transition, so I take what I can when I can. If nothing else, it gets me a head start on that character in case I get a rush of covers for the newbie courtesy of RNG.0 -
I would rather new game modes over new characters. Granted there is only so much you can do with a match 3 premise but I don't think D3 has tapped into its full potential and is instead relying on license to draw the punters in.
A simple time attack should be easy enough for them to knock together, you know the sort, deal x damage in x seconds with match 5 giving added time. Or if that isn't to their liking and endless wave mode where enemies get slightly tougher each wave and rewards for clearing x number of waves. Anything that is non competitive would be welcomed.0 -
I go for all new characters simply because i want them all to be as complete as possible. Maybe that qualifies as pokemon syndrome. But it's not the roster slot that bothers me, it's the tedious grinds hoping to not miss too much time and points so i can make top 10 again. I used to go for top 2 but ghat will make you go kaput if you keep it up too long. I wish they'd stop pve being competing against other players and make it progression based, so you would know what reward you'll get if you work for it instead of hoping to hold a spot in a top 20 where points are so tight you might miss out and bracket snipers winning more stuff with a lot less points and effort.0
-
Nay. But it isn't the roster slot, and it isn't that I never did. The game had just become too much of a demoralizing grind fest.0
-
I'm taking a break from collecting new characters until I've leveled up my languishing 3* roster. There's no point for me to add more when I won't be able to level or use them properly. All in good time I suppose since there's no way in hell that I'm going to speed it up by paying for Iso.0
-
A mix of the first and the fifth. Usually I'm happy and excited about new characters and usually I get enough HP for their roster slot just by playing the game. But sometimes characters like TAH which are clearly worthless come around... and I still must have it. So yeah. I agree with Babinro that new characters are what keeps the game interesting. If they only increased the other resources accordingly, it would never seem like "too many" or "too quick".0

I voted for the first one although, 1,000hp for the slot is high. With the constant influx of new characters it starts to add up. I have 92 characters on my roster (1 dupe, 93 total), I do not remember when I hit the cap for slots but I think it was back in the 60's somewhere. If that is accurate, then your talking 30k hp just for slots! I would have much rather put that hp into buying packs/ shields/ whatever. Although I voted 1 as the other choices did not reflect my opinion. Not to say that slots should be free but just that 1k is high.
I also want to chime in on the shortage of iso, bottom line is that we need more. With the constant release of new characters there are too many places to allocate iso. While the costs to level characters was adjusted a while back, it is still not enough. There is no reason it should cost almost 400,000 iso to take a 4* from 70 to 270 and champion, maybe somewhere around 250 would be feasible.0 -
I roster every single one and grind like mad to try to place T100 in PvE to get 'em.
I'm not necessarily happy about it, though. It's practically an addiction. I only have the resources to get a single cover, maybe two now that I'm in a competitive alliance. That leaves me with months or years of useless characters on the roster as the slow trickle of CP and LTs randomly fills them in to the point where they're more than a damage sponge in essentials.
Luckily the monetary cost is nil. I earn enough through Taco and placement that I can plunk down the 1k as they come up, and I've got 3 1*s and Bagman ready to hit the road if I come up short. I still get to spend on a few daily deals for an attractive vault, but otherwise I don't use HP for anything else unless I've somehow managed to climb PvP to a place worth protecting.0 -
I picked #1, but I wouldn't call it Pokemon syndrome exactly. There are plenty of characters I would happily give up if I could use a loaner when they were required. I just really, really hate not having essentials.
That said, I used to go completely ham on new releases and scrape for every point. Now I just go for t100 and mayyyybe t20 if it's reasonable and the end of the event falls on a weekend.0
