What gets a thread deleted?

I'm not new to message boards and understand there are protocol issues that come up, so I'm wondering if there is an FAQ somewhere that includes what sort of thread will be deleted.

I participated in a thread today that was certainly full of outrage and counter-rage, but when I left it things were okay on the whole. I come back and it is gone.

I wonder what happened and how much rep I surely lost when my brilliant contribution was snuffed out. icon_cool.gif

    Doesn't answer what happened to the specific thread I was in, since I'll never know what was going on... but oh well.

    It's also possible that the thread wasn't deleted but instead merged with another thread with the same topic.
