Team-up for defense in PVP

I assume this has been answered before, but i couldn't find it.
How does the game decide what team up my team uses for defense in PVP?

    as I understand it, the AI randomly chooses one for each battle

    Is it random based on the three you bring into the fight or the 20 you have in the pile?
    if you use a team up in that match does that team up not get to factor into the pile for the random draw?

    It's random based on every possible team up.
    Your pile of 20 doesn't factor into it.

    The game picks the worst possible teamup to both help your defensive team and counter what it obviously knows the opponent will bring...

    Said all the members of the MPQ tinfoil hat society. In reality it is as Bowgentle says, completely random based on all possible teamups. Sometimes they do nothing like 1* mistress of the elements, other times you have a strike tile team and the opponent has moonstone black, loki black, or she-hulk blue to ruin your day. Let's not even mention Rulk purple.
