Game freezes on exit (PC version)

The game is freezing whenever I go to exit it. I need to use Task Manager to kill it. PC/Steam version.

For me too - only since the update a short time ago though, so hopefully will be addressed when the new content goes live?

    Same problem here as well.

Maybe something for the devs to go on:
Game 'hangs' whenever exited and results in an AppHangB1 error with a hang type 2048 when forcibly killing it with task manager. I notice that while the game is hung up it still has ~4 outstanding TCP connections to Amazon AWS, still has lots of threads active (~25) and continues to consume about 20% CPU on my i7. It's pretty much pegging one of the cores.

When the game hangs its video output freezes, but its music continues to loop correctly. The basic windows message pump, however, is no longer handled: the window does not respond to any type of input and stops repainting wholesale. It also cannot minimize or move to the background, which makes this crash a pain to deal with when you're running the game in full screen. You're pretty much required to use CTRL+ALT+DEL to even be able to reach the task manager.

I guess someone introduced some sloppy code somewhere that opens up a live lock bug somewhere. (Concurrency is hard, isn't it? icon_e_wink.gif )
  • Happening to me to, but in a different way on steam. It closes out completely, but Steam still thinks it's running and won't let me start any other game unless I restart my computer.
  • Count me in on this as well. Can't even get to my task manager (Win 8.1), have to restart each time.

Same. Wasn't sure if this was an issue with the game itself or steam though.
  • Same bug on my system. When I click the Exit button on the opening splash screen, the background locks and the program does not close. Cursor still moves, but I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to kill the program (which lists as "not responding"). Killing the program this way causes some sync issues with Steam, I think, because Steam complains when I try to reopen MPQ; I have to reboot Steam in order to get everything working correctly again. I think I'm seeing the same behavior that _RiO_ described above in more technical detail.
  • Windows 8.

Game shuts down normally (so it disappears from taskbar etc.), but when I try to relaunch it, I get the info that it's already running. Need to run Task Manager and kill it in order to relaunch.
  • This issue started for me, today - Fri evening, but Fri morning was fine.

Running Steam's PC version... Windows 7 Home Premium.

Mind you, I haven't done my windows updates in a while... May as well go do that, I think. I'll post again if it fixes the issue...

Edit: Nope, still freezes up on quit, forcing me to task manager out.

Definitely the same behavior. As for Steam complaining on re-opening MPQ: I always used to get that 'game is already running' error if a game that had the Steam overlay enabled crashed midway through. Probably Valve has some additional sanity checks they run when they inject their D3D overlay into a game and because the main game crashes or freezes, it never gets a chance to dispose of the overlay in the correct manner.

If you've got the Steam overlay enabled for MPQ, try disabling it. It may help. (NOTE: without the overlay, you likely cannot perform ingame micro-transactions, but I say it'll still beat having to restart Steam each time.)

Check your task manager. Even if the game window is destroyed, the game may still lock up while it continues to unload itself. That's the problem with threading and concurrently running code; you can never quite predict in what order events will happen, so maybe in your case the game manages to destroy its window and audio output before locking up.

Wouldn't call it a normal shutdown then. icon_e_wink.gif
  • I noticed this today. PC Steam version hangs on exit. The screen freezes when I click on exit. I can close it via Task Manager on Windows 7.
  • This is happening to me on Android as well. And then I can't re-enter the game without restarting my phone. SUPER annoying.

    Adding to this.
Windows 7, running the Steam version. Freezes on exit. Need to Ctrl Alt Del to select the option for the task manager. Simply hitting Ctrl Shift Esc bring it up behind the program, so I can't interact with it.

Just chiming in with the fact that more people on Steam's forums are starting to report this problem:
    http://steamcommunity.com/app/234330/di ... 650781531/
    http://steamcommunity.com/app/234330/di ... 611627226/

    [EDIT]
Hmm... Game just came up with no events available on the event tab and subsequently closed out fine.
Restarted and it picked up and downloaded a content update. Events are restored and game no longer crashes when closing.

    [EDIT 2]
Spoke to soon: back to crashing again

yeah it randomly goes to some test build type thing and apparently the crash glitch isn't in that one lol same thing happened to me. getting really annoying though. icon_e_sad.gif
  • Me too. 10char
  • Mee too.
Since pretty recently. I had no problems with stability up until now.
  • same problem here. Although when running window mode i can right click close program rather than have to ctrl alt delete and kill process
