New player, threaded loaded with questions

Hi all,

I have been loving MPQ since I started playing about a month ago. However as great as it is I am lost. Now, I know of the rules is not to start threads about things that might have been asked before however I don’t know what i need to know therefore I don’t know what to search for. All of my questions are below as well as the characters I have. Thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time to answer

My questions are

1) How do I know which characters to put together?
2) Why do I see so many wolverines and thors everywhere?
3) Which characters are worth upgrading?
4) And which should I just ignore?
5) Is the daily deadpool stuff worth the time? I don’t have any 1 stars
6) How do I know if im in a good alliance or not?
7) Am I better off purchasing covers from the heroic section or the others? Heroic costs 11,200 gold while others cost 15,800. Why is that?
8) How do some people have a maxed out jean grey Phoenix or silver surfer? Is it all money and luck?
9) My main team is Phoenix, Indestructible hulk and Silver surfer or magneto? Is there a better combo I can put together?
10) When I am attacked, Which 3 characters of mine are they fighting against? Because I feel like Phoenix, hulk and Silver surfer are super strong but I always lose when I get attacked
11) Whats a character’s max level? For example it says Kingpin’s level cap is 270 but I am looking at another Kingpin level 375 with 21,589 health with a crystal next to him.

Some of this you'll want to check the FAQ at the top of the forum. That's why we're putting it together!

To take a stab:

1) trial and error. Play with different teams and see who works for you. There are some popular enough to have been given unofficial team names (see the FAQ) but sometimes you just find a team that works well for you.

2) probably part of 1)

3) depends on what you spend more time with: pve or pvp. Again, the FAQ is a resource you'll want.

4) as above

5) yep. For ISO and tacos if nothing else. Worth adding a 1* just for the extra 2500 ISO every day.

6) value judgment. What are you looking for out of your alliance? Camaraderie or rewards?

7) FAQ here, probably. I think the prevailing sentiment is it's not worth buying cover packs unless you're whaling a 40 pack or buying the daily deal (100 HP or less).

8) mainly, yes.

9) depends on how well covered your phoenix and surfer are but my gut says yes, you can put together a better team.

10) the team you most recently won with. If your 5* are single covers they probably aren't as intimidiating as you think.

11) weekly boosts. Demiurge boost different characters every event/week. That's all the crystal means.

12) see above

13) use the characters boosted in that event!

14) see above

15) form over function? Dunno.

Expanding a bit :

1) A good rule of thumb is making sure that you have a power of each colour so you'll always have something to do, regardless of the board state. Also check out for characters that can produce good amounts of a certain colour AP (such as Iron Fist, Scarlet Witch, Kingpin, Kamala, etc and see if you can pair them with a character that has a better power in that colour than those characters have).
2) They, Iron Man and Spider-Man are easily the most popular Marvel characters so they got lots of versions, almost in each rarity.
3) Most characters past 2*s are actually necessary at one point or other, just keep accumulating covers, especially 3* characters who will be the backbone, bread and butter of your gameplay until much, much later. Don't go out of your way to collect 4*s or Legendary Tokens as the amount of covers that you may possible earn of each of them is very limited at your stage, so they will remain useless for months and months. Keep every 3* if possible and try to identify which characters are best to focus on them. There are several guides an character analysis in other subforums.
4) As I said above, most characters will be useful or necessary at some point or other, but the general consensus is that among 3* characters, Ragnarok and Iron man 40 are really bad and Mr. Fantastic, among 4*s. Also as cool as 5* may look, I'd recommend getting rid of them. At your stage, it could be literal years before you get them half-covered and in the meantime they are kicking up your "scaling" (the average level of your top characters which determines the difficulty of the battles the game presents to you), and taking up space while providing nothing.
5) The most important part of the DDQ is getting the easily achievable 3* cover. You could also hit the node that gives another taco token (which you should hoard instead of opening right away, until you have a good number of them as they draw from an exhaustible vault instead of being a completely random draw.) So that's three nodes. If you play the other two, you'll get 3500 Iso which is always a good thing to have but you'll be the judge of whether it is worth your time and having to keep a 1* character around.
6) Depends of what you want. I'd say that you are at a stage where PVP is the most important part of the game for you as it provides a continuous stream of 3* covers. If you can get at least 700 points in each PVP, you should try to look for an alliance where all people do the same so you finish as top 100 in each event for an additional cover. Obviously, more important is that it is a place where you feel valued and respected and the people are nice.
7) Heroic tokens have average odds for every existing character. Other tokens have slightly better odds of opening the characters featured in the even they come from, so if you are looking for a particular character, it's a better option. Nevertheless, buying tokens is a big, high-risk-low-reward lottery. If you want to spend money in the game to improve your characters, you are usually much better of buying the covers that you need directly (you can do so from the "training" screen of that character.
8) Yep. Mostly money. it's ok though, you don't need to spend that much money to play and enjoy the game.
9) You were quite lucky as a green Phoenix is perhaps the single best one cover that you may have of any 5*, but at this point is little more than a crutch that is also making your opponents more difficult. See how for example that team doesn't have a purple or black ability. Magneto is very good indeed and Hulk is great when you are just starting your transition into 3* covers. Try to find a good character with Black and Purple abilities to go with them (Blade comes to mind). Also just try different combinations yourself, that part of the fun of the game. Don't get entrenched playing the same characters all the time.
10) The latest team you used in an event is the one the game uses in your defence, unless someone is retaliating an attack of yours. If so, they will see the team you used to beat them. 5*s may sound like a great thing but they are defensive sugar: with 1 cover they only weak ability that is easy to avoid or ignore. Much more scary are cohesive teams that bring tons of different powers so if you can avoid one or two, you will still be slammed by any of the others. Nevertheless, the AI is purposefully dumb and has to rely highly on luck, so defensive victories are very rare even with a good defensive team.
11-14) Each event has a set of "buffed" characters. You can see which on the little blurb that pops up when you enter an event's screen. All those characters are buffed by a set percentage, so characters that are at a max level, will get pushed far beyond. This applies automatically for your characters as well; you just have to have them (that's why is important to keep as many as you can). Playing with buffed characters is usually a better idea than playing with unbuffed ones.

It all depends on many factors. Many types and styles. I'd suggest pair all 3 to be able to help each other in term of sharing ap for each other (You have choices against different type of opponents). Other option I always prefer is to combine all 3 characters with different (all kind) of color. Then you don't have any weak match dmg from any type of colour. In addition, all of your characters can fire stuff when the required APs have reached.

2) Why do I see so many wolverines and thors everywhere?
I have no idea. lol. Probably Xwolverine is strong? Thor I have no idea cos I think he's lame. lol

3) Which characters are worth upgrading?
It's all up to your choice and style.

4) And which should I just ignore?
The ones that you barely use. Please check character database for all their maxed skills to see if they are even worth to create or level up.

Sure to kill some times. As well to get 3* cover you're lacking of.

This is a tricky question. First, is your alliance active enough? Second, do you communicate with them daily? Third, are they nice and are they willingly to help you for placements on events and scores? Find out yourself.

That is all depends on your need. I'm not a big fan of the event pack, I believe the cheaper *heroic worth more if you are still building your roster. Those Event packs are more expensive but offer newer covers I believe. Do you need those new ones?

You are speaking to me, KingDreadnaught. I'd say for my case as the first person to max every single characters including all 5* with any builds.. it's all about LUCK with money...

I can see you are relying on the high star characters which I can see how can they match in this case. I'd say Silversurf+IronFist+ScarletWitch will be even more deadly in this case. (I love this team when I maxed SilverSurf and Oml didn't come out)

It is because in term of cpu playing for you as defence, they are not you. Sometimes they don't work in pattern as the abilities should do. So high health means nothing because there's always a stronger players out there. Eg. myself put Maxed Pheonix,SS,Oml out floating and I still get sniped by NON-Superwhale deadpool... There are many skilful players and there's always a way.

That's in each event special buff characters. Each event shows in info that which special character will be buffed (higher health, more dmg, etc). Check that to take advantage each event.

Means that character is more powerful in that event.

You can't, it's up to the D3.

The others have been covered sufficiently, so I'll just hit this one because I didn't see the answer I'd give. As a new player, resist the urge to spend HP to get ahead. Use it for roster slots, and roster slots only. Understand, I'm not making a "NEVER PAY REAL MONEY" argument - I've certainly spent money of my own on this game - but at your stage, you need space more than anything. Ample space means you can experiment with lots of characters, and by doing it you'll find answers to those questions about your playstyle.

Once you've got a decent 3* roster, fleshed out from Daily Deadpool play (at the very least, never miss the taco nodes), and are eyeballing the 4* game, you might start thinking about where to spend your HP on a 3* or 4* cover. But without roster slots, you won't have a home for those awesome characters, and it's tragic to see 'em go. Unless money is no object for you, play the long game.

Am I the only one who finds it odd that you're about a month into the game have so many 3, 4, & 5 star covers and no 1 stars?

I'm guessing you bought a lot of token packs? Not that there's anything really wrong with that, but it seems you're trying to accelerate through the game before you're really ready.

Again, not anything wrong with trying to go faster and how you spend your money is your business, but you can learn a lot about the game by just playing through it and looking through the forums here. I'd say 90% of what you're asking can be answered that way.
