Best way to invest a bit of cash to jumpstart a new account?

Returning player here, I used to have a complete maxed 3* team and managed to finish most events Top5 or Top10, but I burnt out when alliances launched and there was a non stop pressure to score high in everything. I used to play on Steam too and I don't think my account is recoverable since back then it was strictly local and I don't remember anything about facebook linking.
Anyway, I'm starting to play a bit again because I'm currently traveling a ton and I honestly couldn't find a smartphone game that was noticably better, so I'm returning to the game, for a while at least. I won't be trying to compete for top positions anymore and I won't be joining an alliance that requires me to live in 8 hour shifts, I just want to match some tiles during train rides.
That said, the initial rise in power is pretty rocky still. Maybe even worse than back then since there is a much larger character pool, so chances are much higher you get 1 or 2 of 15 different characters instead of being able to max out 2 or 3 characters you actually want. Is there a good way to boost up the starting period a bit with the 20 or 50 buck hero point packs? I know I'll need a ton of roster slots. But beyond that, covers aren't worth getting, right? I used to know the game's structure in and out, but it's been a while and tons of things changed :-\

Go slow. If you spend money, only buy slots. As you participate in events and get tokens, you may get lucky and obtain good covers. Since the game HAS changed a lot, you need to figure out what kind of characters you want in your roster. Pvp will give you a good exposure to all the new characters and what players are using in the metagame now.0

Again, I want to emphasize: spend $$$ only on slots. Resist the urge to buy cover packs. You'll end up getting mostly 2 that you are unlikely to keep a month from now.
Play lightning rounds (Tuesday at noon est through Thursday at noon, with a round held every 2 hours) to get iso, token, cover rewards. That's your BEST approach to accumulate stuff quickly.0 -
Your old account should still be on their servers somewhere. Might be worth a try contacting customer support about it.
But for a new account, assuming roster slots are already taken care of, I think the 100HP daily deal for heroic tokens is pretty reasonable. At least until you've got a good chunk of the 3* characters covered, then it starts getting annoying to pull covers you already have maxed. The drop rates are better now than in the past, to make up for the greater number of characters in total.0 -
I agree only invest in slots. I recently helped someone I know start and they drew 3 3* stars in two days. Luck yes, but if it happens for you. Great corner stones. Be patient. Have fun. Put the phone down and back away on some days. You will know that day when it comes good luck0

Oh wow, it looks like my old account is still there after all. How do I get it on my phone? I already linked the new phone account to facebook. I don't want to accidentally overwrite the Steam account...0

Before I go into actually answering your question, D3 have just released MTG Puzzle Quest. It might be easier to get in on the ground floor there, and it seems like quite a nice setup so far.
To quickly accelerate your performance you will want Patch and Loki for PvP. As a 3* combo they are pretty good for climbing. They won't get you placement rewards in PvP, but they will let you climb the rankings and get your hands on tokens and ISO before you get mugged.
For PvE my go to guys are Falcon for all the countdown tiles, Punisher to lay down three colours of pain which the aforementioned Falcon can boost merry hell out of, and Spidey. Most people don't appreciate spidey, but for Ninja missions and multiple round fights his shield tiles boosted by falcon can save you a number of health packs or even win fights by themselves.
There are better characters out there, like Iron Fist and Cyclops, who are quick and great if you are dumping money into shields while health packs recover, because they kill quicker than say Patch/Loki, but they generally can't complete as many matches in a row, as Patch true heals and once you get the berserk/ mischief combo out you generally take no more damage that match and Patch has time to recover.
You will need to obtain starting covers from cover packs, but then it is more efficient to buy the covers above one directly than to keep chasing covers through packs.
That setup listed above is fun and will let you beat most anything the game has. But this game has screwed up scaling. Which means that those 3*s will face you with tougher enemies than you would face with just 2 stars. Your PvP matchups also change accordingly. So if you just want to do well in PvP and get PvE rewards just collecting regular 2 stars, particularly storm and magneto might serve your purposes better than 'jumpstarting' anything.0 -

This is where I respectfully disagree. The fact of the matter is that even offer a chance at a 3/4 pull. And you can accumulate those quite easily if you play lightning rounds and hit some pve nodes.
As a pve player, I get TONS of (1100+ right now and probably 1200+ by year end). If a new player is willing to go slowly and hit the pve nodes that he can manage, along with some LRs, he will accumulate that offer a shot at covers. There's absolutely NO NEED to even buy daily for that reason.0 -
Keepers for starting/new accounts (listing only , ): Juggernaut, mbw, obw, cstorm, mnmag, daken, one of (astonishing wolf, ares, thor), capA. These are your absolute keepers for a starter roster. Focus on getting a max Juggernaut ASAP because he offers the most health/damage for tier. The other characters will be helpful in navigating pve nodes and allow you to participate in ddqs too.0

Sounds like you already have some 166s, so..
- Invest hp only in slots so you can roster as many 3 and 4 characters as possible.
- Level your characters together. Having a bunch of level 166 characters and 1 at level 270 will significantly impact your scaling
- Join PvEs late and try for top 10 rewards to finish out the 3 characters you don't have (minimum effort vs reward).
- Do the Deadpool Daily Quest nodes every day. Try to do the bottom-most one with 3 Deadpool in your party to earn whale points.
- If you're dead set on spending money to help your transition, you can finish off your Jean Grey and Hulk buster, take them to 270 and easily reach 1k progression in every PvP to help collect 4 covers. You can even push for 1.3k progression for the LT.
- Before investing, be aware that 5 characters will make your 4 and everything below it completely obsolete and they are only acquirable with luck. Aside from already being behind on finding 5 covers, you have a 50% chance of being in the bottom half of the luck curve and will be stomped on by 5 rosters when you reach the so-called "elder game."

Well while my Steam account still exists, it's currently useless to me and it doesn't seem like it's possible to transfer it to mobile. So I'll have to start over from scratch either way, since I'll only be playing from mobile.
I had forgotten all about level scaling... I already got two 4* covers (Mr. Fantastic and Elektra) during my first two days from random draws that are lv70 by default but can't do much except matching. My best actually developed character is a 1* Iron man with Lv37... This explains why I'm seeing Lv50 teams in PvE events already -_-0 -
Roster slots. Once I firmly believed that the HP you got from the game just by playing was enough to meet your regular slot demands, even if barely. Now that there are 80+ characters in the game, depending on their luck, a beginning player may easily open a dozen new characters in a couple weeks.0

The game determines your roster level by taking the highest 3 levels of your characters (factoring in event/weekly buffs), and then average it out. For pve nodes, essentials are set to 60-80% of your average roster level, and normal nodes are set at 80-120%. Once the scaling is set (when you begin an event), it will remain set even if you change your roster level (by leveling or dropping a character). So for now, you have to grin and bear it.
Your focus in pve is to grind for rewards, particularly the tokens. you should be able to do all 3 trivials, and maybe some of the essentials. If you can't do the normal nodes, then don't worry about it.0 -

I agree that there is no need to buy tokens. My point was made for someone who is investing some cash to accelerate the early stages of the game. Roster slots are the only thing that you absolutely need to buy (whether with free or paid HP), but if you enjoy the game and want to reward the developers a bit, I still think the daily deal is good way for new players to increase their enjoyment for reasonable cost.0
