Someone hit me for 58 points........but their retal node is only worth 22, for me.

    This. People who have considerably lower scores than you will get a much bigger payoff for a win. Because you are higher, you get fewer points for hitting them back (unless they surpass your score by the time you hit them).

    Knowing this eventually led me to be willing to try to hit those really scary 4* teams worth 75 points that I thought I could never beat, as it turned out that the biggest downside was 3 dead characters. If you win, you get big points. If you lose, your team is dead but you maybe lose a couple points. It also turned out that I was perfectly capable of taking down those "scary" teams, which gave me a lot more confidence to hit those targets. Not a slam dunk, but nowhere nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

    Never hit a team worth less than 38 points. If you hit a lower team, you leave them with a retal node worth a lot more than you got from them.
