I'm just trying to get a general idea of how people tackle these PvP matches, because I have a completely different way of climbing the ladder than D3 thinks is the way its done.

Do you
A. find opponents with MORE points than you, so that it decreases the likelihood of a retaliation attack and give you more points
or
B. "Cherry Pick" (as D3 calls it), weaker players and gain very little points and just do a lot more matches?

I think this new implicated "skip bonus" is a good idea, however I still think they need to find a balance as to who you see when trying to find matches. I only skip people with less points than me, I don't skip just because they would be difficult (I have only done that a few times). So sometimes skipping is the only option.

I don't want to HAVE to fight someone with a few hundred points less than me so I can gain 8 points, only to get fought back and LOSE 40.

Thoughts anyone?

  • I skip to look for someone worth 25+ points but under the new system I'll take the retals because ISO is my lifeblood.
  • I always look for 25+ but can never find them. I agree I don't want to grind for 5 points while losing 40-90, especially if I paid a 300 HP entry fee. This current tourney is frustrating because everyone with points is sheilded and every time I pick a 7 minute fight for 10-13 points I see I've be blasted for almost 100 by a lesser team. And I don't know what retaliation everyone is talking about because I don't see that option anywhere.
  • Another perspective on this is, are you doing the tournament for iso? if so this is an amazing improvement and you could care less about the ladder rewards. I'll join some tournaments early fully knowing that you could gain the same position in 1 hour on the last day as you would starting 2 days before but maybe 10k less iso by ignoring it until then.

This doesn't change the fact that most people are skipping enemies who have multiple 141 etc. Dying is still alot slower than skipping and losing the no-skip bonus

Now about fixing that mmr **** where it's much easier to get 3/4* cards as a new player than someone with several maxed players. . ..

How about making new players transition from 1* to 2*. 2* to 3* etc Almost all these people without even 1 maxed 1* have multiple 4* covers I'm seeing at the top of every tournament of late. At some point they should be fighting more difficult opponents rather than shooting up to the top of these tournaments with such ease. Maybe have concurrent 1* tournaments with 2* rewards and wider mmr range in the normal tournaments?

I play exactly as you do. I just fight with players with 50+ points than me.

I almost never do cherry pick, I skip sometimes If I have to face players way above my level. Now my team is composed of two 2* at 85 and one 3* at 98, so If I have to fight three 3* of level 141 I usually skip, or if I have to face a Magneto classic of level 100+ (this is the only character that is way overpowered in the game). But NEVER to find easy teams.
  • Cherry picking is not feasible unless you tank.

I'm assuming that when you enter this tournament you can select any one of three opponents in the 'triangle formation' much like other tournaments. If you are defeated by someone then you will see this as a red circle instead of a yellow circle meaning that it was that person that last defeated you. You can select that red circle and attack them back if you feel that the reward is worth it, otherwise just skip them (as lots of people do) to find a new opponent. If you retaliate and win then they can do the same again to you and you end up in a cycle with no eventual winner as you both go back and forth trying to outwit each other.

If you get beaten by 6 players then all three icons will be red and the ones under those will also be red, and so you can skip all six until you find a yellow, or fight them all off. icon_e_biggrin.gif

After hearing about this 'skip tax' proposition for a few weeks now and people complaining that they don't want it and that devs don't take the board's input into account when releasing updates, I'll have to applaud the devs on this one. They not only made what seems to be a very fair system, but also increased the ISO payout as the counterbalance. So not only did the devs account for people's hesitation for the tax, but they added in more ISO which many have requested. So instead of it being a tax, it's more like forfeiting your opportunity for more ISO. So, unless you really skip a lot, which is what they have said they are really after, it appears you will actually benefit from the change.
  • I use exclusively option A because B is basically the worst thing you can do in a tourney. First it opens you up for juicy retaliations and 2nd its the fastest way to inflate your MMR into **** kicking territory.

I hope they update their matchmaking algorithms along with the ISO tax. I don't want to decide between fighting someone for low points or loosing ISO.
  • I am thinking they are not quite understanding Cherry Picking, there are times when I have seen teams that I will attack at a much higher spot then I am, and teams that are much stronger then me on a lower slot. Which do you think I would go after.

Any word on timing for R48?? Also, will there be any other changes? Maybe boost prices coming back down??? icon_e_smile.gif

Personally I hope they never go back down. Can't believe I relied on them so much before.

Regarding retaliation - after receiving a notice that you've been attacked, when you go back to the tournament matchmaking screen, you'll see some of the opponent node dots are red instead of yellow. Sometimes they're all red. Each red dot indicates a team that attacked and defeated you. When you click on it if it is yellow, you are prompted with "Defeat another player's team!"; if it is red, you are prompted with "Overcome your attacker!". Each time you skip or complete a retaliation, the red dot you chose either goes back to yellow if there are no more attackers in the queue, or stays red until the queue runs down to less than the number of nodes (i.e. 3 nodes, 5 attacks -> it takes 3 skips or battles before any of the nodes turn back to yellow). There is no visual indication of how many attacks (retaliation attempts) you have above the number of nodes on the screen.
