It's gonna vary, but I know I play about every other PVP season, and as a result I have a shot at top 100 finishes here and there (and have had one or two top 5 finishes). I'm not leveled enough to have a realistic shot at 1000 or 1300, but playing alternating seasons has accelerated my 3* growth.0

I sat out a few seasons due to my last deployment. My first one back, I was in a very slightly easier season bracket, it seemed, but I also needed it as I was behind in characters, and finished roughly the same as I did before I left. I honestly didn't see all too much difference in PvP. PvE, on the other hand, was wonderful for the first event back! And rapidly went downhill from there, as my finish in the first one back put me solidly right back in veteran brackets.0

Alliances kick you out is the effect0

And why?
You could be collecting more tokens and ISO to not use.

The first one or two versus events should be easier to place well, unless some really good characters have been released whilst you are away. Story event scaling should drop too for the first event, after that you will get the pointy end with no lube.0

I took off the last 2 seasons only playing when i need a cover. I can pretty much 1st any bracket i join now but the following bracket is always tougher but still manageable.
The advantage of sitting out only last a pvp or 2. But if you choose your events wisely you can definitely take advantage of some noob bracks.0 -
I took off roughly 3 full seasons. There was no effect in my PVP experience other than the changes that were made. I am low tier vet brackets so a 100-200 finish at 800 points seems normal.0

I took two season off of all MPQ except for DDQ and the occasional PVP in the second season for new covers I was going to need. The effect was I had to whale it up big time to get to a competitive roster again.0

I sat out about six seasons, and rejoined halfway through a season. I got an easy bracket and took like third place for the season (three ten-packs!), but wow was I behind on character releases.0

Don't do it. Join now and you will be guarenteed 40-Heroics. I skipped the first four events last season and ended up in a bracket without all the alliance top dogs. Won the whole bracket by averaging 900 points in the last few events and by getting my SHIELD score up to 2,000 (which I think fell down to around 1,700 by end of season... still got the rewards).
I think I got one cover that I needed, but the ISO bonus was great.
Now, I've already surpassed my score for that whole season, but I'm not sure I'll get any 10 packs... I'm in 125th place (still haven't done my last 1,000 in SHIELD) with 8,777 points. Don't need the progression rewards in Hulk, but I still need a red Hulkbuster cover, so I might push for 1,300 in Quicksilver (I've never gotten passed 1,200).0 -

While I agree with much of your post, I have to disagree here. Rather than skipping PvP to save HP, why not just play to 725+ and not shield? That way you still get the extra 100hp, plus whatever your alliance earns, plus placement hp, rather than a nice fat zero?
I also have to add that I thought HP was "wasted" on hopping. However, when I looked at how much HP I earn with 2 hops, versus not hopping at all, it amounted to the following three options:
No shield: (-0) progression (+100), placement top 100 (+25) alliance reward (+50). Net gain 175. Never had 4* 1k reward.
Single 3h shield: (-0) progression (+100), placement top 100 (+25) alliance reward (+50). Net gain 100. Sometimes had 4* 1k reward.
1x 3h, 1x 8h: (-225) progression (+100), placement top 10-50 (+50 to +100) alliance reward (+50). Net -25hp to +25hp. Almost always get 4* 1k reward.
Certainly, I realize that I would save the most HP with the no shield option, however, I would also lose out on the 4* reward, the extra iso (from placement), and the extra perks for season placement/season score and (in future seasons) legendary 10k token. I have never looked back since. . And to the best of my knowledge, the 4* covers are worth more than 75 to 150hp0 -
My Experience
I skipped last season cause I was on vacation. I've only had a top100 season ranking once before and I'm currently in 27th spot with SIM points to accumulate.
I don't have a 4* roster yet and also don't have a full roster of 3*s at 166. I'm averaging around 1K an event and it seems to have paid off for me.0
