It's complicated. All we know so far is that your past performance will determine your bracket type, but the exact cutoffs are still unknown. It's not even clear if the cutoffs are based on placement, score, or something else. I'll not regurgitate the raw data, but a decent estimate right now is that two consecutive events outside rank 150 will drop you from the hard to normal bracket. No idea what it takes to be put back into the hard bracket though.

The most reliable way to determine bracket type right now is to look at the top 10 leaderboard and the other players around you. If they are known as consistently high performers in PvE (folks on the forum may be able to help you confirm that), then you are probably in a hard bracket. In the absence of explicit confirmation, and if you're not familiar with all the player names, then alliance affiliations can sometimes be used as a proxy since the top PvE alliances tend to have very few slackers.

This would be one example. Sidlon is a commander in my alliance and we're currently ranked 7th. I used to play slice 4 exclusively and I don't recognize those names but you won't see top names until the end of the first sub. I'd say it's too early to tell its type
