Default team in PVP

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place or is a known issue. I'm new to the game and couldn't see this issue noted.

In PVP, my understanding is that the team that represents you when offline is the last line-up you played. However, when I have been playing the current Most Wanted event, every time I log back in and pick a battle I see that one of my lower level characters (Storm 2*) is always in the team and leads to regular negative points making progress impossible. Is there anyway to correct this (I feel I have tried everything)?

Playing on an Android device if that makes any difference.
