A part of the newest rankings discussion about the strength of an individual character vs the value of a support character gave me an idea for a new event/game type.
Single Combat - Limit the player and the opponent to bringing in one character each. You could do it as a between-seasons pvp event or as a pve - Mike Tyson's punch out style where you start against "glass joe" bag man and work your way up. Ok, now I have to derail my own post and pick which MPQ character represents each punch-out character. Because clearly that's totally a good use of my time.
Glass Joe - Bagman
Von Kaiser - Quicksilver
Piston Honda - Colossus
Don Flamenco - Loki
King Hippo - Hulk
Great Tiger - Iron Fist
Bald Bull - Kingpin
Soda Popinski - Classic Magneto
Mr. Sandman - Luke Cage
Super Macho Man - Lazy Thor
Mike Tyson - Hulkbuster
Also, the tournament is hosted by Master Blaster (Rocket & Groot) and Aunty Entity (Mohawk Storm)
So, who are your top 5 characters when they have to fight alone?

ProfX (while invisible)
Lazy Thor
Luke Cage
Iron Fist
Cyclops0 -
Loki would be easier to kill 1 on 1 than QS or Colossus, i would move him to after bagman, as he has 1 active power, and on its own, does nothing much but get some possible matches.
Soda Popinski was big and Bald, put Kingpin there!
Super Macho Man, i would put Starlord, the king of over-confidence!0 -
I'd say pretty much anyone that feeds themselves, heals themselves or have passives that are immediately beneficial.
Iron Fist - Purple feeds black, black increases green and purple damage output, plus his attack tile damage even if stunned.
Mystique - Blue feeds Black and Purple, Purple stuns and enhances black.
Cyclops - Yellow feeds Red, Black is increased by presence of Red on board, then Red does damage.
LThor - Red feeds Yellow, Yellow feeds Green, Green does big damage.
Groot - Blue generates strikes, drastically increases green damage and match damage, yellow heals when down to 25%
OBW - Steals AP with Purple, does extra damage and steals with espionage at 3/5/5, heals with temp health on blue.
Doom - Blue feeds Black, Black generates red attack tiles, doing damage even if stunned, all the while purple slowly builds with a killer blow if it can go off.0 -
I like this! Let's have the original NES cart image for reference:

IIRC that's how the orig game worked though, Piston Honda was the champ of the minor division and was a tougher fight than Don Flamenco who was flashy, but got knocked out pretty easy.
Now that you mention it, Starlord should prob be Don Flamenco.0 -

Some of Starlords animations actually look like Punch-Out moves!0 -
If I'm actually trying to win?
Captain America (Steve Rogers) - Once he sets up, it's just a matter of time.
Prof X
R&G - slow build to 30 green with strikes out.
X-Force - he can still down most.
4Thor - Picked over LThor because of the targeted damage and stuns.
Notable Mentions:
Cage - His moves are basically boxing.
LThor - he's a tank.0 -
Do we get to hold down select between rounds to get our health back?0

Assuming a Balance of Power type scenario:

3/5/5 Luke Cage.
3/5/5 OBW.
3/5/5 XF.
5/5/3 Gamora.0 -

I wasn't really thinking of it being BoP style, but that's interesting.
At first I was confused to why you'd pick Gamora, then I remembered her black. That would be 14-16 strike tiles! (Depends on how many TU tiles are out) Strength 148 if maxed, that's up to 2,368 per match just in strike tile damage. Nice.
That made me also think of Patch. Best There Is would deal up to 16,192 damage (64x253) since all tiles but TU would be his.
You'd have to lock out a few characters from this event type I think.0 -

Lazy Thor
Luke Cage
Iron Fist
Cyclops
This, but changing Iron Fist (who doesn't have a nuke and whose black-producing ability is wasted if there are no other characters with a black ability) with Kamala Khan.
his black producing ability feeds his purple, turning it into a large nuke once you have 12 or more black stockpiled.Iron Fist of K'un-Lun - 5 AP
Daniel Rand focuses his chi to make his fist like a thing unto iron and strikes. If the team has less than 12 Black AP, converts 5 basic tiles to Black. If the team has 12 or more Black AP, deals 498 damage instead.
Level Upgrades
Level 2: Deals 598 damage if the team has 12 or more Black AP,.
Level 3: Either converts 6 basic tiles to Black or deals 697 damage.
Level 4: Either converts 7 basic tiles to Black or deals 896 damage.
Level 5: Either converts 9 basic tiles to Black or deals 1295 damage.
Max Level
Level 3 - Converts 6 tiles to Black or deals 2215 damage.
Level 4 - Converts 7 tiles to Black or deals 2848 damage.
Level 5 - Converts 9 tiles to Black or deals 4113 damage.0 -

Oh right! Haha sorry, I've been using him as a black battery for other characters so much that it slipped my mind.0 -
If we are talking about self sufficient characters for solo fights, I think Elektra actually deserves a mention. She doesn't have AP acceleration like the usual suspects (kk, IF, lazy Thor, Cyclops, etc), but she does have absolute damage avoidance. With 5 covers in back, it would actually be pretty hard to land a nuke nuke one her (because each trap that you break generates black AP for her, so she can keep putting out more traps). Additionally, if you bring someone who makes red strike tiles to overwrite her red traps, then her purple becomes awesome.
She's actually less good as part of a team because it's harder to use her traps to full effect. And she will never be great for sustainability. But in a 1 on 1 fight she would be pretty annoying.0
