Knocked myself out of the top 15

Up until now, I've been a staunch supporter of this game. I'm willing to cut other game devs a lot of slack as they try to figure things out. But I just hit every penalty you could in the Wolvie tourney and it made me realize how frustrated I am right now with this game. I lost 3 fights in a row to spectacularly dumb cascades, can't retry or complete the fight b/c they took that feature out, and on top of that I lost 30 points per match. Which dropped me from 8th to 22nd.

I find it hard to believe that on top of the loss penalties and the no retry penalty that they also want to add an ISO skip penalty. PvP in this game is tinykitty if you and tinykitty if you don't. Can't fight 'em b/c I'll lose points. Can't skip 'em b/c I'll lose money. #wolvieragequit

  • First off: That sucks, really badly. It SUCKS to get screwed over like that, with absolutely no control over the situation. I think we've all been there.

    That said:

We ALL get the shaft when it comes to cascades - that's true of any Match 3 game, there's no fixing that.

The no retry penalty has ultimately resulted in a better overall experience, and you should be benefitting from defensive wins more (as realistically, beating someone you lost to hurt your potential gain from that a LOT). It's a double-edged sword.

The loss penalty is a different issue (but really 10 ISO one way or another shouldn't mean that much if they fix the Matchmaking, which is supposed to occur -in the same patch-).

I wouldn't give up just because you had some bad luck. Especially if you've managed to crack 8th! That's a lot of hard work not worth giving up.
  • I know how it feels to get a bad run of luck and feel like your spinning your wheels in this game. But ...I hated the old system of being able to attack an opponent three times.
  • If you lose more for a loss than you would have gained for a win, which is what it sounds like, its unfair. The three tries thing was bad though. You would drop 10 places by spending the 2 points it costed to skip them. That would just pour saltin the wound.
  • Thats a tough situation but like others have said, we've all been there. The risk you take when you pay a match is that you might lose and losing currently means having points taken away.

I have to agree that the inability to go back and try again is better for the game overall because there SHOULD be a consequence for a loss and it should be relative to the reward for a win. I think this is one of those situations where you have to dust yourself off and pick yourself up next time.

Good luck with the next tournament!
  • I feel like I can accept that another player beat me, but attacking a guy because everyone else will give below 20 points and then losing because of an insane cascade is just discouraging. Maybe not unfair, but discouraging.
  • The only character that is devastating with 'crazy combo/cascade' would be OBW, which you should know how to defend by now (keep her off purple at all costs).

Patch, of course, is always dangerous with Berserker Rage, but you know what you're getting what you face him.

The only team that seems too risky I ran into was Modern Storm, OBW, and Patch. Despite its absolute lack of HPs, I know one combo can easily kill my whole team and figure I shouldn't try my luck even though it's obviously a weak team overall, and I think you got to give credit for someone putting up a gutsy team like that.
  • I disliked the old three attempts system too, because it didn't return your team to full health on each attempt so someone could kill one character the first time, then finish the others + still get plenty of points if they were far behind you. Sometimes teams are designed to work together as a whole so with one member down it can be much easier to kill the remaining two. If you lost a fight and decided you couldn't beat it, you could just leave it in the slot with 2 attempts left and choose fights from other slots without ever yielding.

An alternative solution would have been to regen health to full + put a timer on beating the enemy after you have lost to them once. I prefer the current solution to this alternative.
  • Thanks for the replies. I think I really am just more frustrated with the game than I thought. Lots of stress here the last couple weeks. I've got an hour, hopefully I can claw (har har) my way back up to top 15 - need a couple more spidey blues.

The Matchmaking "Fix" was already added in the Ares Tourney unless you have a link to something else? We are going to get burned with the ISO tax. Are you on the payroll or something you have been defending them all day?
  • I made 511 points but got wacked by a series of 3-4 consecutive losses, losing 94 points after one match. I didnt recover after that. I shieleded for top 45. Sorry to shamus and a few guys who I kept hitting over and over. Frigging borefest.

I was with a shield at 14th, two matches put me in top 8. Shield down for the first match and a forest fire in the city arena wiped my team, -30 points. 3 health packs later another forest fire in the city, -30 points.

Are you finding troubles with massive cascades from the enemy team ?

That was a Loki Lightning Round. Since then, I've been hit by ubber cascades on a regular basis, at least more often than these past two months. Would be nice to know if they have tweaked some lines.

If that's really the only Matchmaking fix they're making, someone needs to slap them around a few times with a large trout. I figured it was implied they were still tweaking it with the new changes because... well, no one seems happy with it currently either. That's even more painfully obvious than the PvE issues.

And for the record: I really resent the suggestion that A. I'd be on any payroll or B. that that's the only alternative to agreeing with you. I already explained my frustrations, as well as why I've posted today here.
  • I got knocked out of top 15 by... winning a whole bunch of matches in the last 22 minutes, getting sick matches and extra turns, and getting hit back too many times. Pretty sure I came in 17th place, but my point is that there's just a lot of variance in the last 5 minutes.

What ISO skip penalty? As far as I can tell, one doesn't exist.
