Alternate method for Essential characters

Okay, so recently, it seems like D3 has fallen into the pattern of the required characters being one 4*, one 3*, and one 2*. While I get that this requires a more diverse roster (which I am generally in favor of), what this usually means is that 1 of the 3 fights (the 3*) is easy, and the other 2 are hard because A) I don't keep all my 2*s maxed and B) Most of my 4* only have a cover or 2.

What I think would be equally "cool", and still encourage a diverse roster is to work like some of the "special events". Why not just have the essentials require "Character X", without specifying a version. For instance, have the node require "Wolverine", but it's up to you whether to bring XF, Patch, or 2*. This way, you're rewarded for having the highest version of that character, but as a 2*->3* transitioner, you should get to participate. Obviously, this wouldn't ALWAYS make a difference (there's only one Kingpin, Star Lord, etc), but at least for the characters with multiple versions, it would add more choice and allow for different combinations based on who you team up with which version.
