Which team does a new opponent see?

I know the usual 'dev please read this' topic don't get answered, but it'd really help if a dev answer here. It's been determined that putting up a tank team and yield no longer works. That's fine. But is the team a new opponent sees the last one you won with, or some other mechanism? There's just no easy way for players to verify this since we cannot control who we see and we sure can't see our own defense team, so it'd really help if a dev can answer this question. This really impacts the strategy and team selection, because let's say we're in LR, I would prefer to start with Wolverine 2* and OBW on the seed teams and the weaker teams I encounter early while my rating is low (because at that point I probably won't get retaliated), but as my rating increases I definitely want to switch to someone stronger defensively, say Hulk and whoever. What I've been doing is when I start need to defend I'd go in with Hulk + whoever and still win with them, but I don't know if they're actually showing up as my defense team to new players. Hulk is obviously not the best character to attack with, so if he doesn't show up as my general defense team (not counting guys who already had me queued up prior to the team change), then this really limits the ability to swap characters.

  • A new opponent still sees whoever you played most recently in the tournament. Nothing has changed there. The only change they made is to the MMR. After you tank, you bounce back up more quickly. This is to keep people from tanking and remaining at that low level for a whole tournament.
  • What if you play your team for a while, then stop PVP'ing and spend all your ISO to train some levels? Do opponents see your heroes as they are currently leveled, or when you last played them?
  • I miss instruction manuals for games.

    I love the smell.

Are you sure? Like, you've seen obvious tank teams in your opponents?

Because in the DC tournament before I knew they got rid of tank teams, I threw mine in. I even won the match, but the next day when I logged in it was my main team, not the last team I used, that was showing up in my team selection.

Nope, I can't find where I read it. Sorry, I thought I remember reading that.
  • There's definitely some changes to which team shows up to a new opponent (obviously anyone who has you queued up or on retaliaton sees whatever team they first saw) based on the recent tournaments. Since it is pretty hard for players to figure this stuff out but it definitely impacts strategy, I was hoping a dev can shed some light on this. If you cannot easily switch whatever team shows up to a new opponent, this means you can't start with a strong offense/weak defense team and then switch to a weak offense/strong defense team before you stop playing or even when competition heats up (while still winning at least a game with the said team). To me, that should be a viable tactic, but right now it's impossible to tell if this is doable.

So in the last lr, i put in a tank team for the first match, decided that i wanted to play competitively, and then used my a team for the rest of the matches. I was getting tickled with retaliations until the end of the event. My guess is that when a player enters an event, the server sends him teams at that particular instance of time, and doesnt refresh the list until the player needs to requery the server (after a win or something). The team on the server is probably the last team you won with (testing this now with the pvp tourney by putting up a tank patch team after winning 200pts with a team). This would mean that putting up a high offense team probably isnt good because any players that play at that time will have your high offense team show up in their match queue, so if their queue doesnt refresh by the time you put up your defense team, theyre going to be able to attack your offensive team. This effect probably doesnt matter as much in longer tourneys, but in lrs and such, its a huge issue, and i know now that im never going to tank the beginning of a lr and play seriously at the nd of it ever again.

Anyone who is already queued up on your matchup list does not have their team changed. That is fine. The question is what does a new person that has you show up (say, via skipping) sees?

Let's say you got team A that's great at offense and bad defense, and team B is the opposite. You're doing LR, so you start out with team A at the beginning, and as you climb to top you switch to team B (and still winning game with team B). Obviously all the guy you attacked with team A will see team A on retaliation, and vice versa on team B. Anyone who happen to you queued up as a normal opponent while you're using team A will see team A as well. That part is fine.

What is not clear is what if a brand new guy who is just looking for a new opponent, hits skip, and sees you pop up. Does he see team A or team B? Here, team B is the last one you used (and won games with), but is there some other rules behind the scenes that we don't know of? I remember people saying they won with tank teams but still show up as their regular team on matchup list. I think it's fair to switch your team after you won a game with it for any new opponents, and if this is not the case, it means you can never use any specialist team (e.g. guys that might be weak against certain matchups) if there's a risk that team will always be the one being seen. It's okay for people who happen to see you while you're using a different, specialized team, but you shouldn't be seen with that team by a new opponent after you've time to switch back to your regular team.

Just got attacked in the pvp event on my tank team, so im pretty sure its the last one you won with. For clarity, what i did was start the tourney grinding up to 200 points with a 85 wolvie / 120 hulk / 85 thor team, and then win a match with 35 patch / 1 yelena / 1 venom. The guy had an 85 thor / 50 wolvie, so im pretty sure he saw and attacked my tank team.

That's what I suspected, but it's really hard to actually verify anything since you can't exactly ask the guy who attacked you what team he saw (though your example does provide a convincing argument), which is why I hope a dev would shed some light on this. I am not looking forward to grind my way up with a Patch/Hulk team (extremely strong on defense, but sure is painfully slow to attack without burning health packs) at low ratings but that's going to be my defense team when I have a rating worth defending.
  • Well, if anyone sees me, let me know what team you're fighting. I've been using Aston Wolvie and Patch, paired with any of Hulk, Punisher, Thor, Ares or OBW. Maybe even a Classic Storm in there somewhere.
