How mature companies are handling a self-caused crisis

So, you may or may not know that the game Marvel Avengers suffered a sh*tstorm this weekend. On Sunday a one-and-a-half month PVP season was supposed to have ended and the final leaderboard rewards handed out, but the developers decided they would extend it for one week literally half an hour before the season ended. The reason for the extension was well founded - an exploit - but yet for everyone who spent all the consumables they had been collecting for month and a half on that Sunday, the developers' last minute decision meant the entire effort going down the drain for many players (sounds familiar?).

Of course, the move by the developers caused a furore in the community.

What did the developers do?

First, they decided they would hand out double season rewards: one batch for everyone who qualified for them this Sunday, and another batch for everyone who qualifies next Sunday.

Fair, no?

But yet, there's more. They also handed out 100 of the PVP currency, an equivalent of about 100 health packs in MPQ (http://forums.playdom.com/showthread.ph ... nge-Points!).

Now if that isn't a lesson for d3publisher, I don't know what is.

Comments

  • You're assuming this publisher gives a flying ...... ANYTHING about it's paying customers. It does not. As long as they "funbalance" the game to create more revenue streams, it's clearly "working as intended."

Kudos to Playdom though for taking initiative and doing right by their player base. I only wish THEY had the PQ rights, not D3, as I enjoy this style of game much more than the card game you mention.

Thanks for the heads up though. Good on you for showing D3 how they can do right by people.

    Oo you're right

mpq would be so much better as a time management zynga-style game
  • I've obviously played both games and in my experience, it is MPQ that is the time management game. In the MAA I have literally never had to wait for a cooldown to finish in order to play something that made sense. Unfortunately, the way MPQ looks now, once I burn through my stack of health packs, time management will be the name of the (MPQ) game.

Don't you see that it already is? This is what I meant in the other thread when I said you were out of touch.

The irony of this is overwhelming. Please look up rubberbanding, stack resets, and health packs then come back and reread your post.

hmm interesting, I'll have to give it another try then

incidentally I've never had to wait for a health pack to play something except when going for a last hour race for 1st
  • Puritas, do note that I am playing MAA on the playdom web site, so I can get tons of anonymous friends with whom I exchange energy gifts. This is obviously impractical if I play through Facebook. As regards the health packs being the limiting factor in playing MPQ, it will be only a day or two before you hit that health recuperation waiting wall under the currently new MPQ rules.
  • Sorry, for off topic. What's the new health pack rules? Please don't tell me they ferked something else up, please please.

I think it's more like the recent changes (boost changes, Patch fix, the L230 PvE matches, etc) make it nearly impossible to just burn through content without using health packs. Once they nerf Spidey, it's going to be even worse (for those of you who actually have blue covers. icon_evil.gif )
  • They have to see it as a mistake. They don't.
Proof of that would be their attitude towards the current events.
Event broken? Our bad, suck it up and we will fix it next time.
Need boosts to play our broken event? Ok lets double the cost of all of them and make the best ones cost HP.
In the middle of a no bracket tournament for 10000 HP? Let me go ahead and double those shield costs for you.

They don't care. If they did anyone with any common sense would see any of these as bad ideas.

I am not playing much now, but I am keeping on eye on the upcoming Spidey nerf... That is going to be the deal breaker for the survivors...

Ahh I see; I tried playing on android and hit that wall pretty fast unless I linked to FB and spammed friends, which I wasn't willing to do.

Spiderman/OBW really minimize the health pack need unless you fk up; maybe they need to add a 1* healer icon_razz.gif
  • I'm... actually impressed. Playdom has done some stupid things before, but they've really done some good things lately. I've stopped doing PVP ages ago, but the PVE is still excellent and everything is still relatively fair. One would hope that D3 and Demiurge will show the same growth soon.
