Looking at the ratios between average T4 character levels and enemy levels, most Nodes had relatively consistant ratios across the board. But that one Essential Node, Davy had unusually low enemy levels relative to his own levels, compared to everyone else, and I'm not sure why. Even his noob team had a higher enemy level relative to character level. Might have been an anomaly, or something else. Can't really tell without more data.

As for Event Placement as a factor of scaling, we can test that. My scaling was very similar to Davy's in Meet RnG, and I barely eeked into the Top 150, while I'm sure that he placed much much higher.

In Slice 5, Simulator Hard, 14 hrs left to go in Sub 1:

    Sim 01 - 132
    Sim 02 (goons) - 170
    Sim 03 - 146
    Sim 04 - 190
    Sim 05 - 147
    Sim 08 (Essential) - 137
    Sim 09 (Essential) - 116
    Sim 10 (Essential) - 178

(Didn't bother going down the right path, nothing I want in this Event so gonna cruise again)

I'll edit the numbers when I get closer to the end of Sub, so it's a little easier to compare.

after all of this I have no idea how to proceed with leveling the rest of my roster. my current plan was to bring ***s up to ~102-104 to add depth to my ** roster for playing pve while taking a select few up higher for purposes of pvp only. one *** will hit 166 tomorrow and my pair with him will be at 140 and the next highest guys are 104 down. reading some of this thread makes me wonder if my leveling of those characters might screw up my scaling. I was forced to play Lthor a while back when he was essential but I played him on none of the other nodes. on the first hard sim sub I was able to do 2 regular nodes and most of the essentials and my teams regularly wiped after that. here towards the end of sub 1, the gorgon/xf/Elektra is 181 and all I've been throwing at it is boosted **thor with a smattering of others (obw, storm, loki at 130, hood at 102, lildaken, etc). is that what it is supposed to be? or are they assuming I will throw Lthor at it (at level 153).

my strategy has been to go with my C team on the trivials (55deadpool/60mostorm/45 or 94 daken), then go to my b team on easy and put together a 'best' team from the typical boosteds and the various ***s I have at ~100. if it doesn't matter I could save a lot of time by just blasting through the easier ones and if it won't matter, I'll gladly clear more nodes with Lthor than any boosted **, but I certainly don't want to screw myself because I'm a very long way from having someone to join Lthor at 166 other than loki. others I have ~100 are daredevil, doom, hood, pun, and grocket. mostorm, torch, Cyclops, squirrel, mystique and gsbw are all ready to bring to or near 100 (will take some time for that iso), so to me, if my pvp team isn't going to affect scaling (my previous assumption) my plan was to broaden my roster at the 100 level before bringing everyone up together. otherwise I feel like I would back myself into a corner on who I could use. no idea if that is actually true or not.

can anyone help with what my best strategy should be? thanks.

You should be safe bringing them up to 104, since you probably already have a bunch of 2* at 94 anyway, so more to that party won't change things.

Having 2 guys at 166/140 is less than ideal, but can't be helped. If the thing about setting starting levels at the average of your Top 3 characters is accurate, hold of on levelling your #3 until you can also bring a #4 and #5 at the same time.

As for your playstyle, you might be giving yourself a little less scaling than your contemporaries, but we're not talking game-changing advantage. For me, it's the difference between "very difficult" and "frustrating." I think it's worth it, but then I actually like fitzing around with guys like DareDevil, Psylocke, and Squirrel Girl. They're not "good", but a enjoy the variety. Your mileage may vary.
