The millon dollar question

I know there are a lot of people unhappy with the xforce nerfs (and Thoress, sentry, Spidey, etc). Regardless of whether you think the nerfs are justified, I think another question is just as important. Given that you can no longer count (maybe never could) on any cards u purchase still maintaining their usefulness in a few months time, will you still purchase cards ?(or packs)

I'm going to make the assumption that you are referring to the Character Covers as cards. In this case, no, but I never did. I'm obviously not a whale by any means, but I only buy HP for the point of increasing my roster slots. I don't mind having to work on getting characters and collecting them in order to buff them up, sure it takes longer but eh, I'm patient. That being said, I'll still purchase HP every once in a while in order to keep my characters I am working on and to get to play with them.

It's been a long time since I've spent cash on this game. Since before the anniversary. But I am frugal with my spideycoin.png . I usually do save enough for roster slots with some to spare. I've used it to by covers in the past. Most recently I made the stupid decision to try my luck with a 10 pack to try to get another Kingpin cover. The changes won't change my spending behaviors.
  • Depends on what you mean by "buy". If you mean use HP to purchase covers, then yes, I'll continue to do that because I always earn more HP than I need for new roster slots and figure it ought to be spent somewhere, might as well be on those hard-to-find covers (rather than wait for DDQ to cough it up). If you mean spend real money to buy HP to buy covers, then no.
  • Personally I'm undecided. After 250 days, I've finally stockpiled 10k HP and was contemplating on whether or not to buy covers. But an alliance member pointed out that if the devs decide to do another back to back to back release then I'll be short on roster slots.

My last purchase of covers was xf last year. considering that a max covered xf boosted my fighting strength enough to place top 25 consistently (with occasional top 5), I consider my hp well spent. That being said, with the way D3 has constantly changed characters after release (let's be honest, more like downgrades for many of them) I would really hesitate to buy any more covers in the future.
  • I've used HP to get 3 - 3* covers in the past, I've never purchased 4* covers as I believe 2500 is just too much, but I won't be acquiring anymore that way. It has less to do with nerfs and more to do with now having a competitive roster and knowing DDQ will eventually get me missing covers anyways

I follow the one cover rule. I never buy multiple covers for any character. I bought one cover for my 4/5/2 X-Force and I feel ok about his nerf. However, this is exactly why I don't like 4* characters: they are so rare that they pretty much demand multiple cover purchases to play.
  • Interesting results, and yes I was specifically referring to spending cash to buy covers

I voted thinking this included token packs, i have purchased HP to get token packs, and probably will again at some future time.

I voted undecided because I've been debating for a while whether to buy the 5th black panther black once the 4th comes from DDQ. That cover is so darn rare, I'm not sure I'll get it otherwise.

Of course, thought the same of Hood blue, bought the 5th many moons ago, it was offered as top 100 prize 7-10 days later. So that sting still resonates.

Those 13th covers are usually the ones that make transitioners spend in this game. I believe vets waste more on shields/packs/boosts because they can get 3~6 new covers every pvp so no point in use 1250 on that.

IMHO people will still buy covers with HP for well-stablished characters like BP, LCap, LThor, Patch, LDaken, Blade, Loki. Maybe not so much on Hood now that he is the baby of the 3*s, the most fragile one.
  • I voted undecided, but IAH, it's gotten really hard to contemplate spending actual money on this game lately. Heck, just playing is often less than totally enjoyable lately. lol

I've gotten pretty tired of paying for roster slots, and it has started to feel like any character I invest in (multiple examples well-documented by others in the forum already) will likely not end up worth it anyway.

I LOVE the bones and skin of this game, but I often find myself wishing it were more reasonably balanced between users' enjoyment and developer's monetary interests.

  • Apparently people had 'fun' obliterating on PvE and PvP with one character that was obviously broken for MONTHS, and now they added various other playable characters (and some unplayable like Beast, Rags and Oct; not gonna use even after the refactor) but people didnt bother because they could just procced to SS + XF their way.

NOW I feel the game is going to have some balance, but still has its top characters, and people are just quitting or saying they will not gonna buy HP anymore... because they cant SS+XF anymore and see dead corpses left and right? Well, SS will still OHKO most characters but isnt just a free win ticket by removing enemy's strongest AP off the board AND reduce that AP pool. Now you have to care about a 1HP enemy getting a cascade and the team firing 6 powers in a row like everybody else had to do until now.

I don't disagree some of your line of thinking, but I believe you are missing the point... Is purchasing a cover still worth it, as it becomes much less of a known commodity, and more something that could change the next release? With limited HP to spend, it sucks to drop it on an upgrade that loses most of its value a week later when D3 decides to change the character.

...Personally, I am undecided. The tidal wave of new characters, along with D3's willingness to change current ones, makes the game more interesting for me. It also makes me much more hesitant to spend money.
  • As I pointed before, for some players (specially transitioners like myself) there are well worth covers to be HP-wise a good deal, for well stablished characters.

For example, let's think that LCap just had been on some events and it's probably take a while to be a reward again and I'm missing one red or blue cover, then it's a good idea to drop some money on it. Right now mine has 3 red covers and it's alredy been given on DDQ, so if I end up getting 3 more blue I'm surely buying the last reds.
  • I know I will not be buying covers for 4 stars. No point. 3 stars maybe.

    Thanks,

    James

Voted yes, never bought a 4star, never will. I've bought prolly over $100 in 3 star covers and I've made out on all of them. This **** ain't rocket science.

For the people who no longer see the value in buying a virtual card that isn't fungible, what value did you ever see in it?

I pay money because I find the game fun and engaging, not because of the intrinsic value of any card or cover.

So you pay money because you find the game fun and engaging... but do you not hope to make the game more fun and engaging afterwards?

I don't think anyone is paying for some intrinsic value of a cover, they are hoping to "buy" a more enjoyable experience. And I can totally understand how it isn't enjoyable for them to buy a certain power set, and then have it change a week or two later.
