Why are there so few * characters?

I mean, I get that people transition away from star.png reasonably quickly into star.pngstar.png and beyond, but the standard tokens which make up the bulk of the token rewards mostly return star.png covers, and with so little to choose from there, that means sometimes it's a run on the same couple of characters when opening tokens. It's not all that interesting when I pull Black Widow six straight times with standard tokens because there are so few star.png characters from which the game can choose.

I can see D3 wanting the more popular characters to stay in the star.pngstar.pngstar.png and star.pngstar.pngstar.pngstar.png tiers to encourage people to buy tokens, but I also look at characters like Storm (Mohawk) who have variants at the two tiers below, as well. It makes me wonder about the viability of having star.png * variants of some of the star.pngstar.pngstar.png characters. Not the gold "I'm just a buffed version of a lower-tier build" type, but a different power profile.

Right now, with my roster having a single star.png character, standard tokens are exactly as interesting as the star.pngstar.png , star.pngstar.pngstar.png and star.pngstar.pngstar.pngstar.png covers they yield. I wouldn't mind if that changed. No, star.png characters aren't going to materially make my team better, but they'd make standard tokens more interesting to open, and I would totally spend $5-10 on a roster spot or two to play around with a new set of characters more easily attainable than star.pngstar.pngstar.png . Even if just for the novelty.

They want the one star characters to be a controllable introduction to the game.

It's a lot of work to design new characters. Why waste that work on something that almost no one will use and will certainly generate no revenue?
  • You just have to train yourself when opening those tokens that whenever you see a 1- star.png cover, your mind sees "100 iso8" instead.

Then, instead of "Black Widow" "Black Widow" "Iron Man,' it will be "100 iso" "100 iso" "100 iso"
  • Considering how powerful one stars can be in Balance of Power, it would be very interesting to see what several more might be capable of. Plus the deadpool daily makes one stars more interesting and useful than they had been before. Headbutt and Widow's Sting, while useful, get boring ad nauseam.

I'm sure there are templates of some sort, that would make it easier to have more one stars. Just make a **** version of a higher level character so they can use something already licensed. One star Spiderman or Wolverine, even a Hasselhoff version of Fury senior. One star She-Hulk or Beast, except they'd be almost the same as the three star, two abilities rather than three, and probably more health.

That's the thing, that's where I'm at right now. If I don't see a shiny silver or gold cover, my mind goes 'into the ISO grinder with you.'

Which, okay. It's not like I'm actively being harmed by turning the star.png "trash" into ISO. But it would still be more interesting if there were a greater variety of star.png characters, and with "Balance of Power" or DDQ, I'd have more opportunities, even with my roster, to use those new characters.

I get that it's work to design new characters. I'm not saying "double the selection and do it now." But I do think it would be interesting to see more variety down there. I'm not expecting any world beaters. I'd just like to have a new toy to play with from those copious star.png covers.
  • The 1* to 2* transition is comprised entirely of the Prologue is basically why. You level your Iron Man and your other 1* of choice, and then you get Thor/Storm 2* covers and start using them as your third. Pretty soon you have a 94 Thor and then you start cleaning the Prologue of 2* cover rewards. And the Prologue is a fine place for them to exist as well, you get into the game, get a feel for rostering guys and leveling them, and then you move on to building a core 2* roster.

Not to mention the frequency in which 1*s are handed out in PvP. You can basically roster any 1* you want to full covers by playing the PvP simulator.

Basically it comes down to this: With roster slot pricing making every character you keep worth 800 imcoin.png eventually, the only 1* you want to keep long term is Juggernaut for BoP (and to give to alliance mates at TU), and since a level 1 5/5 Juggernaut can beat the 1* DDQ node (yes I've done it before with my level 1) and BoP buffs him to 270 you don't even need to put ISO in him. Given that as the 3* and maybe even 2* condition of 1*s on rosters, why would you want them to release more?

How many 1* do you think we need?
I'm not paying 850+ HP for a roster slot just for the novelty, unless it's 3* or better.

That's the thing you don't have to have any one stars. Maybe one if you want all of deadpool daily. It wouldn't matter if there were 50 one stars, you don't have to have them. New 2, 3 and 4 stars have been released since I started playing in Jan 2014, I don't recall any one stars in that time.

We probably don't need more than three of four characters total in the game. So then it comes to how many characters (of any class) do we need, and how many does any one player need, and does every player need every character.

I don't think it ruins the game by having more one stars. They are cheap to level, easy to come by, and easier to part with when you need space for something better.

They want new players to be able to quickly build up a stable of well covered characters that they can play with. Adding more single star characters to the mix will make that take longer.

New players are very slot restricted until they have progressed well in the prologue, so making them purchase more slots while they have a weaker team isn't a good development move.

I was just about past one star land before I found these forums but was getting by with im35 and mbw. if you think about when you were at that stage beginning the game if there were more characters, say 20, what would beginners do with 3 or 4 slots and they end up with 8-10 different characters in waiting? that would be even more overwhelming than the 3 or 4 they end up with deciding between now. it is kind of a flash in the pan time-wise but for rank beginners, I'm ok with limiting their choices when they don't really know what's going on anyway.

Id love a few more viable 1*s (looking at you Yelena), including a few new ones. Just add a little bit of flavor but not so much that it causes problems for someone starting out.

One BIG thing Id love to see is a "Sell all 1*" button after opening tokens. That interface once you open tokens is horrible.
  • Roster slots are far too expensive to introduce more star.png characters. I know that for 99% of the time they won't be needed but for completionists it's just awful. Now if they were to make it so star.png characters didn't take up a roster slot, well then I'd be all for introducing as many as they want.
  • For the same reason minimum wage exists, you're not supposed to stay there for too long.

I thought beast and she hulk were 1 star.png charecters?

in BOP you just use juggs...no reason to use any other 1* IMO. Black widow is alright I guess

    What about this...

Make a few current 1 star characters gold; Venom, Jugg and maybe Yelena for example (those without an upgraded version)… and maybe add two or three new 1 star gold characters.

When you have a character fully maxed, you’ll have the ability to evolve them into a (new single cover) 3 or 4 star version of that character… And the only way to obtain these new 3 or 4 star characters covers is from this method.

How about some mad random oddball 1 stars http://www.comicvine.com/profile/olddud ... ers/37858/ . This way we can have some fun 1 star only PVP/PVE events with a little variety and laughs.

Or possibly just add Cloak and Dagger (1 male, 1 female).

Yeah. Or else change things so that you have to sell 2*, 3* and 4* individually and the 'sell all' button as it currently exists only targets 1*. Either/or. Selling 20 covers one at a time after spending time in PVP is rough.

i wouldn't mind new onestar releases but only because i could safely ignore the events they'd be rewarded from. icon_e_wink.gif
but there's better things to do for the devs than this really.
