This might have been suggested already, but for a PVE change, change it PVY (Play versus Yourself).

You choose 3 characters and then the opposition team uses the exact same team against you (minus or plus a few levels) and once you beat that team, you choose your next team to use, which can’t consist of anyone that you have previous used. If there are 10 fights in total, you would be using 30 different characters, so you would need to figure out who would mesh together nicely quite a bit down the track.

Edited to add: This could a 4th node for The Gauntlet (without having to finish other Gauntlet nodes to enter).
