Why do 4 stars do so little more on matches than 3 stars?

The gap between 2 and 3 stars is like 15-20 points at max level, yet 4 stars only gain a couple of points over their 3 star counterparts. Why is this? I would expect 4 stars to swing for 88-93 on their best colors rather than the low 80's.

    The devs have answered in the past that this allows team compositions to be more interesting, since 3*s can tank their primary colors over the 4*s teritary color.
