Could someone explain Magstique to me?

I understand Magstorm, but how does Magstique work, and what's a good third?

Magneto uses Purple to generate Blue.
Blue fuels Mystique's Blue, which she casts to generate Purple and Black.
Her Blue should generate enough cascades to - fingers crossed - cast Magneto's purple again.
    Rinse and repeat.

The third partner doesn't matter a lot in a good situation. In a bad situation, you'd want a really strong black caster like Black Panther to make the finish faster in case the infinite doesn't last long enough to win.
  • Got it, thanks!
  • Who you want for 3rd depends on 1 thing: How good is Mystique's Masterstroke. If you do 3000 damage for 11 black, you can safely go purpletile.png -> bluetile.png -> purpletile.png / blacktile.png and use Mystique to gun everyone down (a bit slowly but hey), and your 3rd partner can be a pure board shaker. Hell, even Juggernaut would work for cheap green plus a red hit if you get some. Can even shapeshift for the killing blow of 7k on the last guy.

If you do **** for damage with 11 black, you need someone who can dish the blackflag.png damage. BP works very very well here. He's basically all about the blackflag.png damage. Also viable here is XF, who fulfills the board shaker requirements of scenario A as well.

The only character whose skills help enable the combo in any meaningful way is X-Force. The combo generates a ton of black AP, and surgical strike is the only skill in the game that is black and generates more AP for the combo. Surgical on red (mnm red) / green (X-Force) / blue (MQ blue), purple (MNM purple), or even black (master strokes) are all insane, and even surgical on yellow removes a useless cover and enables more combos. This is why I think X-Force is the best partner for MNM MQ. The idea is that once you get the combo going, you've already won. X-Force is the only character whose abilities help you get to the combo and keep it going. With X-Force, you don't need to worry about going infinite after you're at 30 black AP, since it's basically impossible to not go infinite once you've reached that point.

If you don't have X-Force, then you want guys who tank colors for MQ so that you can protect them while you gather AP, such as Cage and BP. These guys are considerably worse, since they don't sustain the combo, but they help mitigate damage on MQ / MNM, giving you a better chance of going off. The better black outlets on these two guys are slightly better than masterstroke, but you still need to sustain the combo to take advantage of that, of which neither of these guys do well.

A gentlemanly scholar posted a video using "Winfinite" recently. You can find it here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=24927

The only blackflag.png ability that generates AP? Resident Bullseye fanboy disagrees. Actually, Cryptobrancus suggested this alternative to SS in another thread.

In any case, Bullseye's lvl 5 blackflag.png Murderous Aim will easily string together a bunch of bluetile.png or purpletile.png to keep the combo going. Otherwise, you can wait for 30 blacktile.png AP and try for the bonus damage. In practice, getting the bonus damage isn't trivial, but it can be done and it's a fun little challenge.

It's great in theory, but if you have a lvl 5 blackflag.png X-Force, well, then you should probably stick with that.
  • Been using this combo for some PVE and Deadpool daily(Survival Mode). As mention, BP is a excellent 3rd partner.

I never quite got this combo either until an alliance-mate advised to wait until I could cast Mystique's blue twice. that will allow you to flood the board with purple and black tiles, almost always ensuring that you get enough purple to combo back into blue (even though mystique's blue is less efficient than one color battery powers).
  • This combo really doesn't generate black AP that fast as a function of time spent (most of your time is spent looking for blue/purple AP to keep the combo going) so you really want a third person that can do a lot of damage so that it isn't like watching grass grow. X Force happens to fill the black damage role quite well and of course he also does more damage than just about anyone else. If you don't have X Force then make sure you put some +match damage on purple/blue and probably a +crit damage boost. While they've almost no impact on whether you'll win the fight at all it'd be good for your sanity.

Just finished using Magstique, and it is glorious. I used it in the Daredevil daily and I was able to go through a whole round with named heroes without matching. There were times where I didn't receive enough purple or black from Mystique and I had to do some matches, but other than that it was smooth sailing. I understand now why all we play against is AI: playing against humans that can exploit combos like that would be infuriating.

I think the newest MPQ member Iron Fist would be a great partner for the Magstique combo since his moves love having a lot of black AP stored up

The only issue seems to be that for those moves he uses Purple (which you need for Mags) and Green (which you're not likely to generate much of.)
