Give newer and casual players a break

I have been playing this game for a long time, and a lot of the recent changes to PVP, while they've been infuriating, have not had any serious impact on my ability to play. This is because I have a good store of currency and no pressing need to spend it. I earned that currency almost entirely from PVE and PVP events, which I've been playing religiously since I could.

But what about players who just started, or who don't play as much as I do? They're faced with a PVP environment wherein they have to compete violently with other (better equipped) players just to claw their way to very meager PVP progression rewards. They have to compete with some of those same players in PVE, but they very likely don't have access to the same roster base and can't play all of the missions in question. When they do fare well in tournaments of either variety, they win covers for which they have to buy new roster slots that they can probably ill afford.

Rosters are more expensive than they were when I started, and the number of available characters is higher. Meanwhile, HP rewards from PVP have been reduced (along with the value of rewards at all breakpoints as of the last few tourneys), and progression reward goals in PVE have become very high indeed. The Hunt for Ares was different from the Hunt for the Punisher at least in part because there were fewer replay-able boards with HP as a reward. Shields, which are frightfully handy and good for the community in general, have moved from being prohibitively expensive for new players to being prohibitively expensive for most players and just out of the question for newer and casual players.

So, my suggestion/feedback would be, "What the hell, man?" Ease up. If you can't figure out a way to more eloquently extort money from the entire base, don't just ramp up the expense until only the established players can afford to play. You are gradually eroding all of the attainable rewards from this game. I was ready to quit this game right after I started, but changed my mind because PVP was awesome. I'm glad I stuck around, because it's been a lot of fun--but if the environment in which I started had been this oppressive 3 months ago I would not have made the same decision.

  • I see this sometimes, and I don't see what the problem is, really. A newer player will get more out of the 2* covers and tokens given out on the lower end of rewards, and literally almost anyone can claw their way up to the 325 mark to get the first cover and 3 tokens (2 standard 1 event).Really, the only thing I feel is rough on newer players is the number of roster slots. I think it'd be really worthwhile if MPQ gave out a free cover slot for each prologue chapter you completed (in addition to all the other rewards given, not taking or changing any of those).

Once you start doing tournaments, if you are really putting effort in, you can get to the point where competing for covers (2* or 3*) isn't out of reach. Yeah, sometimes you'll get stuck in a bad bracket with some heavy hitters, but I really don't feel the current environment is punishing to new players or casuals. (Hell, my Steam account isn't linked to mobile, so i use it to check out the casual play scene. Ain't easy street, but if you put the effort in, you advance).
  • I agree 100%. I am a newer casual player, and have no hope of catching the 2 star covers in this event without Grey Widow, Punisher, and Patch.

I worked pretty hard at the Ares event, and got a decent Ares as a result, but I feel like because of that work, I am now matched against very high level opponents in PvP tournaments. Every opponent has at least 1 85 and my highest is that Ares at 64.

I loved Puzzle Quest, and am a lifelong Marvel fan, but will probably uninstall this game soon out of frustration.
  • If you don't make a point for using HP for your cover slots then you got to be more choosy on who you're keeping.

That said I don't think it's actually very often you have new worthwile characters to debate whether you need to keep them. Unless you're regularly getting 3 stars (in that case you're not really that newbieish), there's not much harm in throwing away most covers for 1/2 stars at the moment.

I've been fighting level 85 Thor with my level 61 Thor since forever. I placed top 5 in pretty much every bracket I cared about in the recent PvP events, and I still don't have a level 85 Thor. Seeing a level 85 Thor is not 'very high level at all'. It just happens in DC, Thor is pretty much godlike as he can single handedly take out an entire team. I really don't get what's with all the people complaining about seeing level 85 Thor or Wolverine as some kind of 'MMR hell'. Is there some kind of MMR paradise where the average opponent uses level 30 Captain Americas instead of the two characters that are so powerful and widely available that you can see an official announcement about their impending nerf?

You just need to drop your MMR. Do what I do, and tank the occasional lightning round when they come up by putting up your lowest / worst team.
  • People are seriously confusing with certain point rating being a slaughterhouse with MMR. At somewhere around 500-700 is where the hounds are set loose. Having a low MMR might help you get there easier but there's no escape once you're in there. That is where the vast majority of the top players are and if they're not escaping that range of points, neither are you, and it wouldn't be remotely fair if you could escape that range where whoever dares to have more than 700 points instantly gets murdered.

With the change to shields you'll probably see the range of points move out further. The reason why you can't break 500-700 is because nobody else can possibly do it either, outside of the very lucky or the very rich (e.g. if you can shield each time you stop playing, you can probably break away from that range).
  • i agree with this post 100%!! i understand that its all about the bottom line and making money but especially with the recent changes they have made it impossible for the "casual" player to advance/compete. there was a note recently about making it more "fun"balanced but all they have done now is made it so people who spend a ton of money on the game can succeed. it is very frustrating. i was playing a tournament with thor then all of a sudden on the very next match he was completely different and near worthless especially compared to some of the other heroes. i knew they were going to change him but damn they over did it!! not to mention the stock up boost costing gold now. that was one of the only was i could win a tournament against someone who has spent tons of cash on the game. if they want to make it more balanced why not give much better drops on the worthless recruit tokens or make it so you can actually choose who you get when youre paying for it?? i never want to spend any money on this game at all because its such a **** shoot on whether or not you will get a hero that you actually need/want. i loved this game about a month ago but they have made soooo many changes all at once that its made it so i dont really want to play anymore. i just feel defeated by the creators of the game... they took a great game and are currently destroying it.

I wanted to point out that part of the impetus for this thread was the change in progressive structure in the PVP events--with prizes being paid out at the 100s instead of the unusual smaller numbers. In these tiers, the first 2 star isn't until 600. This more expensive progressive system was gone for Army of One, but reinstated for The Best There Is. I'm hoping that the Wolvie tournament is the exception, and that the expensive progressives will be gone again soon. They are bad.

But yeah, the roster slot costs are bad. Bonus ones for completing Prologues would be very cool.

Devs have said they're reevaluating progression reward levels for the new scoring levels people reach, but it will be a few more events before we see them changed. The next few PvP events are all finalized already.

I used to think that rooster pricing was bad, but after 3 playtroughs, the pricing is fine, i have 16 slots going on 17 without breaking a sweat. The only heroes that i got rid of were hawkeye one star and the bag man.
I am a casual player. Newer players got it easy, just play the 3 story campaigns (oscorp) + daily rewards and youll have enough resources and covers to be pvp/ pve competitive, sure you are not going to be top 100 since you need to get real and understand it takes time if you go f2p to get a rooster that will enable to score further.

New player finish story missions, do some shield training up to 400 points = WIN.
Max iron man 35 , max juggernaut so u can leave those 2 as your garrison if you play pvp events.
  • I found the game to be brutal starting out and getting a foothold was tough but it felt rewarding at the end. With the way things are now and the ISO tax coming if I had to do it again I wouldn't bother as a new player.
  • Developer's solution: "Spend more money and you'll be able to compete."

Our response: "Screw you, gimme my money back, it didn't make a difference. You'll nerf whatever we spend money on anyways, making it go to waste."
  • Even PvP isn't as harsh as many thinks since it's very bracket dependent.

During the just finished wolverine tourney I got my first top place finish with my highest char a lvl 81. While inspecting the top 10 I noticed that NO ONE had a single char above 85, and two, at #8 and #9, had lvl 50 ironman 35 as their highest char.
