Four Character Groupings

How do people feel about classifying characters in these four groupings?

1. The Brutes (Red + Green)

They smash things up.
Wolverine ****, Black Widow ***, Ragnarok, The Hulk, The Punisher, Wolverine ***, Ares, Thor, Wolverine **, Juggernaut, Storm *.

2. The Support (Yellow + Blue)

They help you carry out your plans.
Invisible Woman, Iron Man ***, Spider-Man ***, The Hood, Captain America, Spider-Man **, Storm **, Iron Man *.

3. The Rascals (Pink + Black)

They undermine the opposition's actions.
Loki, Black Widow **, Bullseye, Daken, Moonstone, Venom, Yelena Belova.

4. The Others (None of the above)

Tricky to categorise. (Especially the 2-skills as Black Widow * may be a closet Rascal). Fairly individual.
Doctor Doom, Magneto ***, Hawkeye **, Magneto **, Black widow *, Hawkeye *.

I think it's a potentially useful way of looking at things. Particularly with some of the quirkier tournament restrictions and for people who are after a rainbow or versatile team. You could see at a glance that you can cover the Divine Champions with Loki, Storm **, and one of Ares/Thor/Ragnarok, for instance. Any thoughts?

  • I think this is great. I've been thinking along these lines as well. I was trying actually to assign 'stat' names to each of the colors as in most cases it seems that similarly colored abilities perform similar functions, but that got overly bloated.

I think a good fourth category would be Masterminds, for characters like Magneto (either) that offer more proactive board control rather than reactive or random board control.

Maybe the classifications shouldn't fall so narrowly along color boundaries? Someone like Modern Storm is really more of a reactive board cleaner than a brute despite her green/red/black power set.

I really like it, great way of putting things.

2 characters jump out at me though. Classic storm seems like kind of a category one, she smashes things up with her green.

And the hood, probably my favorite character, definitely screws up teams plans with his AP stealing. At level 5 it's a devastating skill and his most useful. Seems like a definite rascal.

All in all though it's an interesting classification system.
  • Yes, it's a bit of a generalisation, so there's room for flexibility. The Masterminds idea sounds pretty good. Aside from Modern Hawkeye, they do seem to offer a degree of strategic control. (Maybe his is, "Hey, I'm important, don't hit me!")

The Hood I do think is pretty supporty, cos of the AP generation from his yellow and blue, and the cooldown boost from his back. I can see cases being made for both Storms either way, but it probably isn't a be all and end a matter.

I'm interested then in thinking about the relative power of these groupings. In recent times the red+greens have been pretty dominant, with the best *, **, *** (pre-Ragnarok nerf), and **** (ha!). Almost every team has at least one of them and some have two or even three.

The pink+blacks are languishing a bit. Probably because they all have powers that need fairly specific situations to work (well). Even Original Black Widow, the character I enjoy using most in the game, has abilities that can seriously underperform depending on circumstances.

The yellow+blues are a mixed bunch, from Spider-Man to Bag-Man. The good ones are really, really good. The bad ones are a bit meh.

The others do seem to have some pretty potent characters in there with a degree of strategic control as pointed out.

Overall the community would probably rank them:
    1st: Red+Green (11 characters)
    2nd: Others (6 characters)
    3rd: Yellow+Blue (8 characters)
    4th: Pink+Black (7 characters)

Also, does the fact that they're so easily grouped mean there's room for more colour variety? I get sad that only The Hood has yellow+black. Also we have 5 red+green+yellows, 3 red+green+blacks, 2 red+greens, just one 1 red+green+pink, and there's not a single red+green+blue. Or is this a good thing that simplifies choices?
  • The majority in the other catagory use blue, it would make sense to change the catagories so that everyone is in a specific catagory (not other) for example.
Characters can be in multiple catagories, colours has nothing to do with categories.
