A full clear of slice 3 brought me to 3060 - so I'm not sure what the top guys in the bracket are doing. Top person is BGrifterSA at 4412.

What are they doing to get that total, I wonder? Are they doing multiple clears? Do they know something I don't know?

This is most certainly the vet bracket, btw.

Yes, they're doing multiple, sup-optimal clears. Happened in my bracket. I happened to be on lunch when my bracket started, and I pre-joined since I don't really care about the placement rewards. Was the first in my bracket to hit 3060, and stayed in first for a while. It's about 2 hours until my nodes are ready for an optimal clear and there are now 62 people in front of me because they did an extra clear (or more). If you started at the same time as them, and are doing optimal clears while they grind haphazardly, you will pass them back and they won't be able to catch up.

Opening node in the main was worth 120, one time node in the sub is worth 200. Full clear of the sub then gives 2740. A theoretical person hitting optimal clears from the moment the event started will look like this:
    Start = 3060
    2nd clear (+8h) = 5680
    3rd (+16h) = 8420
    4th (+24h) = 11160
    5th (+32h) =13900

There would then be less than 4 hours left until sub 1 closes for you to grind down nodes as low as you like. Highly likely that with that level of play you'd hit the top progression before the end of the 1st sub. And you'd likely be sitting in a clear 1st in your bracket unless others were doing the exact same thing and ground nodes more heavily than you at the end.
I've used this method, but somehow people still pass me up and beat me. Last even got 89-90k and someone in my alliance got 110k at the end. No clue how they do this.

If everyone does this method, then it comes down to who grinds the most at the end of the sub. The more subs, the more chances people have to outgrind at the end of subs. I've used this to my advantage if I start a bit later in a bracket. I have a strong roster and can possibly grind stuff down more efficiently at the end. In Prodigal Sun I worked my way up from the 40s to 30s to top 10 over the first couple subs by putting up more points at the end than people ahead of me. It got me up to 3rd by the end, which let me be a little bit lax on my final grind and still finish 6th overall. After the first set of subs I was top 10 in all of the subs except one where last minute I ended up 11th. Optimal clears are great and give you the best chance of success provided you can still grind the end.

Also, if you got 90k, and someone else in your alliance got 110k... did you start at the same time? If so, did you each hit every optimal clear?

If you started a sub later, that easily explains it. If you hit everything at the same time, they just put up more points at the end of the subs.

Slice 3 vet has 266 players at 10:55 GMT. Leader is CaioSRaynor with 7138.
I would guess that this slice won't fill before the end of this sub in 12 hours, in fact it may not fill at all now.
  • Slice 4 is at 910 (I think - I can barely read the number on my phone and there's an outside chance it's 970).

    Slice 4 is @933 players.
    #1 mistical@10346, #10 @8429
Only added about 20 players over 2 hours.
At this rate you're looking at another 6+ hours before a new bracket opens up.

Question regarding grinding. Basically I've only got one full refresh coming up before the end of this sub. Is it more beneficial to wait to do that fully refreshed node until closer to the end, or to do it now and then grind the last hour or so?

Depends on how you feel about making 6 full clears.

If you can do 1 full clear in 20 minutes with no health packs needed, you can probably start around the 2 to 2.5 hour mark and grind to the end.

If it has been taking you 45 minutes to make a full clear and costing 3 or 4 health packs, you are better off starting immediately, clear what you can and playing again as soon as you have health packs.

You gain more points for extra clears than you lose for clearing early (typical rule of thumb).

Doing more nodes non optimally is always better than doing less nodes optimally. So unless you plan to do the nodes exactly once and then never again no matter what, the earlier you do it the better it is so that you have more time to do more nodes later.
  • Looks like Slice 4 is at 967 now.
  • Slice 4 now 983. Filling very slowly, but will probably fill in the next few hours.
