Double subs suck the fun out of the game

Despite occasional crankiness (I'm looking at you, roster slot prices) I really do enjoy the game, that is, until I don't. icon_e_smile.gif Like right now. Back to back double subs. It's just too much. The game is fun until you have to clear, clear, grind, grind then do it all again right after. It's just too much.

I know some will say that you don't have to do any of that. Just play as you wish. But we all know that the game is designed to be played like that. It's just too much. Too repetitive. Too boring. The game is a chore then. And I'm asking myself more and more often, why do I bother? I want to play well. I want to compete. I enjoy it. But requiring prolonged gameplay like this is sucking the fun out of it for me. And if it's not fun...

I've been playing the current event super casually, missing whole halves of subs, and I'm going to finish top 150 no problem.

Completely disagree. Having one easy sub and one sub lets newer players play one sub without feeling left out. Veterans can challenge themselves with the harder sub. The insanos can try to do both, get burnt out, and then treat it like it's the game's fault that they have no self-control. How do they have fun normally?

People complaining about everything sucks the fun out of the game.

I don't know anyone who does that, esp. not vets. To compete you really have to do both. And both back to back is the issue really. Although, I suppose I might try skipping one and seeing how I finish at the end. I'll still earn enough for my alliance.

The "no self-control" trope doesn't apply when talking about the way the game is designed. Also, lighten up. You'll have more fun. icon_e_wink.gif

Oh I am! I'd be cryin' in my Cheerios if we still had 3 hour refreshes.

To compete you really have to do both.

To compete for what? For all 3 covers, yes, you have to clear everything and do it with ideal timing. To win top 50, you have to do all subs. For top 150, you just have to do the high point nodes, and don't even have to do that ideally.

For a top 150, you may be right and that might be what I start doing. I know I've had to work fairly hard to be top 50 and, depending on the event, even top 100.
  • My original post was a little knee-jerk harsh based on the title of the thread, and recent tone of the forums so I've edited it a little.

I think we agree the game is designed so that if you want to 'win' at the top tier you either have to spend absurd amounts of time or money to 'win'. It's almost a psychological trick based on gaming the people who need this feeling. Those who have the time can spend the time, but those who are willing will spend money instead. Money for a feeling. Now that's not bad per say; we do this in thousands of other ways. It just becomes debatable of how exploitative it is.

However, when people continue to play and not have any more fun; they are an addict. Why else would someone play when they feel the pangs of suffering? The healthier 3 choices of action would be:
    1. Quit cold turkey.
    2. Quit gradually through substitution, eg: a different game.
    3. Some acceptance of the mechanics of the game, and a change of personal expectations.

I'm really pushing people to stay in the game, but have a change of personal expectations. It is a fun game, otherwise we all wouldn't have gotten into it. To see people continue to play the game and hate it..., it hurts through personal empathy. No one except the sadistic truly want to see it.
  • I brought this up in the event thread. I don't think it's the two subs at once, which works fine in Brotherhood and other events, so much as the shear number of nodes between the two. Part of the problem is we're not doing the community progress bar thing anymore, but instead of taking out the extra four "reinforcements arrive" nodes they just dumped them in with the rest. That's four extra nodes that used to show up only at the end of the subs, if at all, that are always among the hardest of the bunch. If they made them one-and-done like the bonus nodes in Brotherhood with a similar rewards structure I don't think the overall grind would be quite as offensive.

V good post, daibar. And you're right. My instinctual reaction is to compete. But it's not always healthy to do so. I already left one alliance because I didn't want to keep up their pace. Perhaps I need to find ways to scale back even further. I.e., go for top 150 and not top 50. It is not healthy to play a game if it's not fun. Things like DDQ are perfect because they can be played in short bursts when time and mood fit. I suppose it is my expectations that need adjusting. The game will adjust when enough people burn out and leave and not before then. So, you'r right, the onus is on me to adjust.

Yes, it's not actually the double subs per se, but the time sink. So one giant sub with 20 repeatable nodes would be as bad as two with ten each. Having a few non-repeatable with higher rewards would be a nice compromise for those.

This is only the second game of any kind I've ever played. The other was Star Wars: Team Assault and it was simple and never time-consuming, so I'm a noob to all of this. It's been surprising to see my reaction to it all. There is something insidiously addictive about it. Hopefully, I can find a better balance and manage to enjoy it and progress.

Double the ISO and HP rewards? Sign me up.

I'm in favour of multiple simultaneous subs so long as they aren't very long. Any more than 24 hours in duration and you'll spend way too much time grinding nodes for 20 ISO.

I'd rather have too much to do than not enough.
This ADDS fun to the game for me.

If you don't wanna play then don't play. For those who are saying t150 only requires the high level nodes, you must get amazing brackets because i have to grind as much as i can (i have a busy schedule) for a possibility as t150

The extra rewards are nice, but obviously I'm kind of burned out by it all.

And yeah, if I don't want to play, I won't. I guess I'm just a dope for sharing my frustration. Lesson learned.

oh i agree with you. although i really hate new character release events more. you feel obligated to get the new character for next event essential and obligating you to buy another roster slot for a character thats going to suck balls for a year.

all this for a character that everyone will forget about in two weeks when the next new character hits and we do the same shizz all over again.

8 hour refreshes have helped a ton. i only wish i could throttle myself down to get just top 150. the extra one cover really isnt worth it but the 50 hp per sub by top 50ing each one really adds up and if youre top 50ing the subs you should end up top 50 overall i would hope. but its really not fun. id rather be gauntleting.

It takes me 80 minutes to clear all 18 nodes, and I have one of the biggest roster in the game.
