Boosted characters effecting starting levels

So the Devs have said boosted characters don't effect "Scaling", but it does appear that they have an impact on the starting level of your nodes.

Using the last hood node as a benchmark - A rocket and a Hard Place - and comparing nearly identical 2* or soft-capped rosters

Me / Other 2* rosters
Start - 134/114
1st clear - 164/134
2nd clear - 194/164
3rd clear - 209/179

The only difference? Before the event I leveled Star-Lord to 94 (he's boosted to 154), for literally no reason other than the devs saying it can't hurt you. This is not personal performance scaling either, the starting level alone pretty much debunks that.

Anyone have a similar experience? Or maybe an idea on what is causing the level difference?

TLDR: Do yourself a favor and avoid leveling any boosted characters before the event starts.

  • When exactly did they say it doesn't impact personal scaling? I just remember they fixed the difficulty label on a node to account for buffed characters recently.

PVP remembers your MMR across events. No reason to believe that PVE won't remember your Personal Scaling from previous event and apply it to baseline starting levels in the next one.

Which is not to say that you're wrong - my whole PVE strategy revolves around Level Control, so obviously I think it has merit. Just saying that your evidence doesn't invalidate other theories.

Edit: Unless you guys were in the same bracket, and ended the event with same level scaling.

That's very interesting and something that crossed my mind.. The possibility of PVE scaling decay. I always just assumed decay was from sub to sub and not event to event.

    Mau,

It's not clear from your first post that you have controlled all the variables.

What do you mean when you say "nearly identical" 2* rosters?

Also, did your control 2* rosters perform as well as you did in the last pve (and you must have done pretty well to be able to level starlord to 94)?

The devs recently said something that suggested that the first page of any given roster may have some effect on mmr. It may also have some effect on pve scaling, in which case even relatively minor roster changes (other than boosting) differences may have scaling ramifications.

Another possibility is that there is some miscommunication going on. So perhaps when the devs said 'boosting doesn't affect scaling" they meant that scaling calculations don't take boosted levels into account. But maybe scaling DOES consider the base strength of boosted characters. That way the devs can honestly say what they did, but your scaling might still go up after leveling starlord.

Consider a PVE with essential character X.

Two players (A and B) have identical rosters EXCEPT that A has 3 covers for character X and B has10 covers for character X. Does play A have different scaling from Player B. We don't know the answer to that, but if the answer is yes, it might explain why you are seeing a big bump in scaling after leveling starlord, even if the scaling doesn't take starlord's boosted levels into account.

TL;DR: You are right to speculate about why your scaling jumped up, but I don't think there is enough data to conclusively say that the devs mislead you.
