Character rotation as a guide as to who to focus on?

I love NP's transitioning guide but do you think there is a case to be made for a person starting the transition towards a 3* roster to look at it more from an availability perspective as to who to cover and level?

For example, the best characters for a newer player to be gaining are Daredevil, Doctor Doom, Human Torch, Loki, Magneto, Punisher, Thor and Wolverine, simply because they have been rotated out already and are the least likely to be rotated out again any time soon.

Similarly, the worst characters to be collecting are Blade, Deadpool, Falcon, Gamora, Hood, Luke Cage, Mystique, Rocket and Groot, Sentry, Spider-Man and Storm as these are the most likely contenders to be rotated out next. There is little point for a new player to gain a couple of covers for any of these and then have them disappear for a few months.

What do you think?

If people think this is a good idea, I will make and update a thread.

I think this is a good idea. There are always lots of questions from transitioners about who they should focus on, and cover availability is a big consideration for them. Given how hit or miss it is for transitioners to hit T100 in PvP, your list would be very useful to them in terms of what PvPs they should consider spending Iso boosts and HP for shields on.

I don't know though ... Luke Cage for example has only had a single intro PVP. I would tend to doubt he gets vaulted anytime too soon.
I haven't followed trends on how quickly we are seeing folks get vaulted after release, but I'd say it's more important for folks to try to get covers with value regardless of potential scarcity. it should definitely be a factor, but a great character doesn't change, unless you're trying to say this would be a good reason to get covers for someone like Beast before they get reworked...

While I totally agree that some covers have more value than others, I guess it's more of a medium term thing and am sort of generalising and going with the fact that it's better to have any particular in-game character reasonably covered and in use, rather than a character that even if better, is just languishing for a longer time. I think NP said something similar to this at some point.

I only didn't include Squirrel Girl as she was only introduced this season and therefore really should be around for a few months at least. Luck Cage was the one season earlier and I am sure he will be around for a bit yet. Statistically though (given it seems to have settle to around 3 or 4 characters each time), both of these characters are likely to come out sometime around 3-4 months after their intro. R+G and Gamora were the season before, so would half guess seeing at least one of these removed in 2-3 months or so. If rotation is indefinite, the first of the already rotated characters will have to disappear again in 5-6+ months, but that should be enough time for a newish player to get a decent enough foundation for them.

    What a flawed system. Anyway...

It's really hard to say. Another way to look at it is that the characters that are currently in rotation are going to be the ones featured in the upcoming tournaments for the next couple of months, which means that you probably want to keep all your covers that are in the current rotation since those are going to be the ones you can immediately gain covers for. I definitely agree with the characters being just rotated in / new being the ones to focus on as they're least likely to be rotated in, but I think it might be better to keep weak characters currently in the rotation since that might get you a useful cover this season even though it might be rotated out later, as opposed to keeping a weak character that is rotated out, but is slated to go back in at some point since you won't get that value for another season, and you'll always have a chance to earn covers for that cover later on anyways.
  • So a character that has been introduced recently or rotated in will stay about two seasons in at least. With one featured pvp on each season and one pve giving it's covers you can get about 6 covers IF you can join a T100 alliance for both pve and pvp (and for pvp it's hard to get a spot as you are a transitioner), maybe 7 with pve progressive rewards one pve after. While it's a good number there's a chance you don't get from 1 to 3 of those, because of you roster, either too weak for high scores on pvp or too shallow for pve essential nodes.

If you didn't have that one yet it will still be unusable, not counting the new characters every other pve that also need space.

My guess is that it would take around 4 months to get enough covers unless vaulted again, and with this some will be rotated in making it possible to keep your progression on them too.

So pretty much can't focus someone specific in time, as it depends on the ones on current rotation that might be rotated out and also how many covers you have on the ones rotating in AND how many covers you manage to get while it's in.

I would say that you should just keep what you get and pray for it to be a good character, or else wait a couple months when it's here again. Only after a couple very good ones you will start getting 4 covers regularly at pvp, but might not be enough for pve as it depends on a good bracket (there are some serious guys with 2* roster that can snag your spot just because they can make perfect rotations).

TL;DR: hardly a trantioner will have the option to focus someone specific to gather covers, gotta wait until the right ones come to take the first step. This can take 2 or 6 months. Or more.
