How about releasing new characters in PVP first?

I've been thinking about this a lot. It seems that a lot of the top rosters that dominate PVP begrudgingly grind away at PVE for the first shot at the new covers, especially 4* covers. This kind of pushes aside the guys that can't compete in PVP for the next set of covers for the same covers, then they guys who just won it by grinding (despite huge disgust for grinding) win it again in PVP.

If they released the new characters first in PVP, the 'top rosters', and the 'whales', who in my opinion should have first shot at the new covers anyway, will be able to compete and get their first set of covers. Perhaps this will alleviate their feeling the "need" or "obligation" to grind PVE for the same covers. This would potentially open up PVE for those who truly love the grind and have weaker rosters to be able to have a better shot at the new covers.

How many of you here, if you could get the new covers in PVP first, would ease up on PVE and feel less inclined to grind?

I'm just curious, because I think that something as simple as switching which event releases the new covers first would ease a lot of the tension between PVP'ers and PVE grinders and the endless debate over refresh rates.

  • D3 has said that they like to reward the dedicated players first. In PVP, anyone with a good enough roster can scoop up a cover. By releasing a character in PVE first, and requiring essential characters to win them (usually won from the last few PVEs and PVPs), they're ensuring that whoever wins the cover:
    A. Puts in a fair amount of effort + money.
    B. Has been playing relatively hard for at least the last 2-3 weeks.

Further, PVPs are only 3 days. PVEs that award new characters are generally a week long, allowing for anticipation to build up, and allowing casual players who play on any specific day of the week to see the competition and join in. If it was switched to PVP first, I'm sure a great deal of Forum goers would be happy, but the general player base not as much.

It's an interesting suggestion, with both positives and negatives. I'd definitely benefit if I could then win a cover in PVE.

It'll be great all the arguing will switch to how P2W PvP is and how shields/boosts/etc. completely break the game and need to be changed.

If I recall correctly, Patch was first released as a PvP prize. The tournament featured the newly released Ares, so those who had done well in the previous PvE had an enormous advantage. Then when Thick as Thieves had Patch as a featured character pretty much every sub rewarded Patch covers.
Since D3 hasn't used that release method since then I guess they weren't happy with it.

I believe Lazy Cap had this treatment when he was released as well, as in the "rewards in sub brackets" part.
I know at least 9 to 10 of my 13 covers were earned this way.
I wish they would do that part again. We haven't seen it since.

If I remember right, he was released first in the very first run of Thick as Thieves, and they gave him out as rewards for placement in each sub.

I think the Rage&ruin tournament was first, but I could be wrong.
Don't think Steve-o was a sub reward other than in the two-part Heroic Venom though. Thor had that treatment too.
  • Patch was released in PvP before PvE and he's one of the few (possibly only) exception, though there were a lot of Patch covers to go around in TaT so it may seem like that's when he's released. It's certainly where a lot of people completed him.

Yes, it was an incredibly fast release. I guess that is why they haven't repeated it. icon_e_smile.gif
  • Nick Fury was released as top aliance reward in PvP. He was featured in PvE, but I don't remember him being the PvE reward ever.

He was the reward in the Hulk event that ran in... August, maybe? It was a pretty dreadful event since they compressed it so much the subs weren't even 12 hours long, and only the top 10 got Nick. Then he was essential in the Brotherhood event that ran next. That was after he had been a season reward though, but the season reward was supposed to be a sneak peek - this was Nick's official introduction.
