"Wars" in PVP? Really?

So I'm not gonna name names. But I don't see what the thrill of sniping someone else in the game.

I mean if I see someone with good points I'll go, not because I have beef with him/her or his/her alliance.

The only time i feel sniping is justified is when:

1. You're shooting for top 5 or 1 position and attack the guy above you in the same bracket to amplify your rank while bringing his down. It's a tactic. No hard feelings.
2. You're in top position and hit no.2 to prevent him from stealing the spot from you. (Though it'd make more sense to find someone with high points to extend your lead, i guess?)

If you have a falling out from your ex-alliance or someone disrespected you in some way or another about the game, well, that's just it: the game. It's just a game. What's the big deal?

I guess that only reflects on the type of person you are if you're so into sniping. Or it's just a cheap thrill (the kind of adrenaline rush you get between shield hops).

Or am I missing something here? icon_eek.gif

    Yep.

If people enjoy sniping, so what? It's not like this is anything new. I was part of some alliances in the past that would call out any xmen on BC so people could gang bang them. Now maybe it wasns't fun for the guy that came out of his quick sentry hop to find out he'd been tagged for 200 points, but so what? It's a game. This is part of the game.
  • Pardon me, I'm just trying to comprehend.
  • I find that if I hit a big guy a couple times they're more likely to hit me even if I'm not worth a lot of points, which allows me to retaliate whenever I want. That's the main reason I'll repeatedly hit someone. Also people with maxed goddess/xforce get really mad when you beat their team with hulk patch.

Yes, beating someone by hulk-bombing is fun. I'll admit thinking that the guy got red in the face is an added bonus too. icon_mrgreen.gif
  • How do you "snipe" someone? I understand that if someone hit you, you can hit them back, and they can hit you back, and it can continue until someone loses their attack attempt. But that's no sniping, that's countering. Outside of that, how can anyone repeatedly hit the same player without using cheats? We can do that now - just hit whoever we like?

    Define "snipe" please.

I think that when you get to the really high PVP scores, mmr has a much harder time finding an appropriate match for your nodes. So you end up seeing the same small group of players over and over again, which makes it much easier to target individuals (and also enabled out-of-game coordination between top players to climb to super super high scores).
  • To me sniping is purposely waiting for the unshielded periods of shield hops to purposely hit a person to make him drop points. If you're doing it just to gain points without checking whether he's shielded or not then its not malicious. When you wait for him to unshield and ONLY attack when he's unshielded then it's sniping in my book.

Certain alliances rally their members to carry out such tactics on specific players / alliances for god-knows-what reasons. I created this thread to better understand those reasons.

People in a competitive reward event don't all hold hands and sing Kumbaya?

(Also, the reward system is stooooopid.)
  • The common goal is reaching 1300. There shouldn't be any wars before that objective is reached IMHO.

Sure! As long as no one attacks anyone else before they hit their goals....

Oh wait, that makes no sense?

Or it was just to save ISO so you know there a least one high target unshielded to find when skipping targets.
  • Lately, it seems a lot of people here don't understand what PVP entails, and define "sniping" as "hitting any player when they're not shielded and making them lose points". Until the reward system is modified, I'll keep doing it because sniping is a legitimate tactic and part of PVP.

Personally I've never gotten caught up in any "war" because it's petty and meaningless to me.

    Why 'sniping' is sometimes necessary:

Let's say I'm at 900 points and shielded. I have 3 juicy targets queued up. I unshield and attack all 3 of my previously queued targets. After 3 fights, my points are now at 1000. I'm not ready to reshield yet though. Anybody I queue up now is getting 'SNIPED'!

Am I supposed to stop fighting after those 3 fights to show everyone else 'Proper Respect'?

Previously this might be the case but now that cooldowns are in the game, I need to make every shield jump count for as much as it can. I am now limited to the amount of times I can jump.

    Let me continue...

My 3 fights are over. I'm at 1000 points and a sea of 3-4 point fights are showing up in my queue. Suddenly, a 30 point fight appears. Of course that's who I'm going after. That person is now getting 'SNIPED'. Not out of malice but out of necessity for the system that D3 has now put in place

I hope this explains the rationale behind high level sniping
  • There's a big difference between hitting someone who isn't shielded and LOOKING for someone who's unshielded.

The thing that people can get a bit prickly about is when someone is literally waiting til someone is unshielded in their bracket THEN hitting them in order to reduce their score as opposed to happening to queue an unshielded target up and hitting it.

Consider an example where you are 2nd, really want first BUT because of the shield CDs you'll only be able to hop once more and you think the guy in first is in the same position. The only way you are likely to get first is by specifically hititng him when unshielded. So... do you snipe him or just let him have the 4* cover with a whimper?

Personally I tend not to snipe ppl in that instance but that's because when I was getting 4* covers that mattered I just hopped my opponents to death so it didn't matter and I don't feel enough of an urge to chase Elektra covers to even bother sitting there looking for someone to unshield icon_e_smile.gif.

In all other instances intentionally waiting til someone's unshielded is a bit dickish but not against the rules so I wouldn't complain about someone doing it. If they did it to me though I would make sure to repeatedly return the favour icon_twisted.gif

Yeah you didn't see those chats. That wasn't the reason.

I think there are a lot of people doing this, and there is no malice behind it just hunting for targets. If you are skipping through low point nodes and a high point target just shows up that person likely just unshielded but the attacking player may not know that and just says ooh points and starts the battle.
  • It seems a lot of people have very different interpretations of the term "sniping".

I know of certain players in the current carol pvp who PURPOSELY dropped their scores to be in hitting range of their targets so as to snipe them.

    That's really getting too excessive...

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it impossible to target someone who is shielded if they were not already in your queue or as a retaliation?
