Why can't I queue people that I can see are unshielded?

I have a very narrow lead in my current PvP bracket at 700 pts. I can't queue anyone for more than 15 pts, except for one poor player who appears every 3rd skip. 7 of the top 10 in my bracket are unshielded and have more than 600 pts. Bewildered and a little frustrated, I decided to go ahead and shield for the day.

Can someone explain to me why I can queue people with less than 600 pts (I presume because they are worth only 15 pts), but I can't queue any of the players in my bracket that are currently unshielded? Can they queue me?

  • MMR (matchmaking rating, I think) chooses who you get matched against, and sometimes that's a very, very narrow band of people. The other people might have a higher mmr or a lower one, but it will usually only match people with a similar mmr.

MMR is very mysterious, but it seems to be raised by winning and lowered by losing. No one knows exactly how it works, and D3, who might not either, won't tell us.

Thanks for the answer, Ben. You are probably right and I should have known that, but I convinced myself that MMR doesn't exist once you get into the 700 pt. bucket.

My guess is that my MMR is lower than I thought, because most the players in my top 10 have maxed 4* characters and I don't. They probably can't queue me either. It just feels odd because I had to fight my fair share of maxed X-Force teams to get to 700 pts.
  • This is their broken MMR that makes no logical sense.

    [soapbox]

It would make sense to scrap MMR and show you matchups based on any player in your time slice whose points are between 150% and 75% of your point. In your example, you would see anyone in your bracket between 1050 and 525

You're mostly right. Once you hit around 750 or so MMR doesn't exist anymore and you can queue up people with double your score or even more! That's when you see the 40+ point matches.....or at least did before the shield cooldowns were put in place making it much harder gain points.
