F2P After 1 Year – And what you can learn

Today is my 1-year anniversary of playing MPQ, having just received my purple Dino yesterday. During that time, I have played 100% free-to-play and have achieved:
-50 roster slots
-X-Force (270), Fury (202, 13 covers), 4*Thor (200, 10 covers), Invisible Woman (70, 13 covers)
-13 level 166 3*’s, 16 more that are cover-maxed (7 above level 100)
I thought I’d share the journey of how it was possible, and help out newer players along the way.
The Early Game
Max Your Current Tier- The first strategy question that came up for me in the Prologue, as it does for many, was do I max out my 1* heroes, or do I just focus on 2*’s? I soon realized that I was getting more bang for my buck by leveling the 1*’s, even though I knew they would eventually become obsolete. (I still carry IM, MStorm, and Juggs) The maxed 1*’s made it easier to compete for 2* covers (back when they weren’t handed out like candy). Don’t skip the 1*, 2*, or 3* tier.
This Is A Competition- I soon learned I wasn’t competing against the game, I was competing against other players. My primary goal became, how can I play better than other people with a similar roster? This is a principle I still use. It led to many of my maxims in this game, such as…
Use What You Have- Because I didn’t fully finish the Prologue before dabbling in events, my first two maxed 2*’s were Captain America and Daken. I know, awesome, right? But I learned to play with them, and they carried me very far. Their weird synergy allowed me to play forever without using health packs, because Daken tanked purple/black/green and Cap, well, gave moral support. Maximizing and completely relying on Daken’s healing allowed me to push longer in PVP’s and clear more nodes in PVE’s than other people with similar rosters.
The Fastest Way To Progress Is PVP- I also noticed early that PVP’s handed out 9 3* covers a week, while PVE was around 3. I had to figure out how to win in PVP to progress the fastest. Yes, focusing a 2* roster on PVE is the safe and steady way, but I didn’t have patience for that. I think it’s ridonkulous to hold back your roster to try to manipulate scaling in PVE. Max everyone, win in PVP, get more covers.
Take Every Advantage- When I was stuck at maxed 2*’s, I knew there were TONS of other players in the same boat. How could I rank higher than them? I looked for every little edge. I pushed late at night west coast time because I knew east coast players would be asleep and I’d get attacked less. I also joined brackets late at night, because it was more likely foreign players were in those brackets, and hopefully not be able to be efficient at event end times. Other people waste time complaining when a gameplay change is made. I spend my time trying to figure out how to best take advantage of the new rules. It’s all about beating other players.
Defense Matters- I also performed well because I didn’t take a lot of damage in the first place. I initially came to this game because I loved earlier Puzzle Quest games. In those, you didn’t beat the boss unless you made sure he never used his abilities. That means being good at manipulating the board to make sure he never took his colors. I still do this constantly, to make sure the AI never uses it’s big abilities.
How I Transitioned To 3*’s
Milk The Current Best Strategies- I came up too late for Thorverine, but was still around before the true healing change. So I got really, really good at utilizing OBW + 2* Thor. Steal AP, heal, make sure the comp doesn’t use any abilities. Eventually you have enough for Thor to kill them. Rinse and repeat. This is how I first broken 800 in PVP and eventually started winning 3* covers. Yes it eventually became unusable, but fine, move on to the next best thing available to you.
Maximize Tokens- Lots of people complain and hate tokens. That’s rubbish. Plenty of my covers came from tokens. 12 of my 13 IW covers are from tokens. My X-Force was 3/3/3 at the time of the buff because of tokens. Get every token you can. You essentially trade in 7 Heroic tokens for 1 3* cover. Collect 100 standards and get 1 or 2 3*’s. If you can’t win a 3* cover, at least get the tokens.
Level Your 3*’s- My first two 3*’s that I could max higher than a 2* were Hulk and Punisher. Not top tier, but ok heroes at the time. Taking them to level 100 when 2*’s were at 85 was a HUGE advantage. I could only do slightly better, right? But slightly better than ALL THE OTHER 2* PLAYERS meant I could do tons better in the rankings. I’ll say again, I’m against all hero gimping.
Buck Conventional Wisdom- I knew conventional wisdom was to spend HP only on slots. And I did that a good amount of the time. But I realized everyone else was doing that too, and that meant I’d only progress as fast as tokens would allow me. They were a good base, but I needed maxed 3*’s to advance. Once Punisher and Hulk were better than my 2*’s, I decided to do every single thing possible to get more covers for them. I didn’t have enough HP to buy covers, but I realized the best use of HP at this point wasn’t to buy more roster slots, but to save some to use for shields. I waited for PVP’s that rewarded Hulk/Punisher, saved up some HP by not buying roster slots (throwing away a lone Hood yellow cover in the process), and won more covers for Hulk and Pun ASAP. That let me level them more, which let me win more covers. I had my first two maxed 3*’s at about exactly the 4 month mark of being in the game.
Max Rolls Max- My transition goal was to get two maxed 3*’s. And it worked. Punisher and poorly spec’ed Hulk allowed me to win other covers. Seriously, all that matters is the first two. It doesn’t matter if they’re not great. They’re still better than your 2*’s.
Keep Milking The Current Best Strategies- I never had a maxed CMags before his nerf, but even with 4 covers in red and blue, I was still able to milk him with Patch. When Sentry came along, milked him till his nerf. (The only cover I ever bought was Sentry yellow to take him from 153 to 166) X-Force is the new best strategy? Fine, I wasted tons of HP to get him as 1300 progression rewards. Now working on my 4* Thor to pair with X-Force.
So Now…
Now I get bored every so often. I play much more casually, and there’s been like four PVP’s in a row where I don’t need any rewards, so I play Marvel Contest of Champions instead. But I also still look for unconventional strategies. My go to in PVE is still Daken/Psy/Falcon, as it’s sustainable because Daken tanks 3 colors, and it’s super fast. I use Rags/MoStorm/Loki on super hard nodes for their endless turn. I still have fun, even though tons of people only want to complain about game changes. I’ve seen lots of changes. You can let them stifle you, or you can adapt and take advantage.
Feel free to ask me anything and I’ll try to monitor this thread. But know that it’s possible to play this game completely F2P, and while it’s definitely slower now, the 3* transition is still definitely possible.

I forgot to mention I did all this while working 50-55 hours a week, sometimes more. And still spending time with my wife. She hasn't really complained.0

Okay okay, ill update my guide to reflect how buying covers or shields can be more important than slits if youre close to transitioning. Nice work on the tips!0

I have had a similar stroy to you, just not as much luck with 4Thor and Fury. I got my wifed hooked on the game so when I played she could play the same thing0 -
Great post.
Mods should place this in the Tips and Guides subforum, so it won't get bumped off the page so quick!0 -

She plays Candy Crush, and we'll play side-by-side, but she's one of the people who actually cares about the story in a match-3 game, so she won't come over to MPQ.0 -

Your post as a whole is a very good constructive & positive analysis...thank you for sharing your thoughts...it is a breath of fresh air on a forum that sometimes spirals out of control in the complaining department. As I said before, enjoy playing the game, improve your roster a notch, repeat.
As you said in your post, the transition might be slower now but still very possible...I am closing on 140 days played so I began my MPQ journey around the end of August which I think is a good example of the new reality of transitioning to a maxed roster & I can see the light at the end of the tunnel which confirms that with some dedication it is very much possible to do in not too long of a time (it is relative here...but this is after all a character development style game so I would not personally expect it to happen in a hurry). I use all my PvE / PvP HP towards roster spots / shields (I've also put some money in the game to buy some roster spots at crucial moments but nothing extreme...maybe 40$ over 4 1/2 months) & I currently have 4 characters that are a cover or 2 short of being maxed plus half a dozen more than have enough covers to level past 94 so I think that I am doing very well in the game.
I use high end style techniques that I leaned either on this forum or from my alliance mates to make the Top 100 in PvP which is the edge I found to beat other players to the rewards. Although it sometimes fails it served me well so far...for example, I shield hop once or twice every PvP trying to synchronise the in-between shields with the cool downs so I usually only use an 8 hour shield & then a 3 hour one at the end. I usually end up in the standings surrounded by maxed 3* players so I am truly over achieving with my roster performance wise...
Yes, I run PvP events at a deficit in the HP department but I grind the PvE to make up the difference...making it sustainable overall.
After reading your post (and recently missing a few Top 100 for some reason...maybe the competition is getting stiffer lately with more dedicated transition players sticking with the game), I will consider even more the alternative of simply levelling up a pair of to run with...to save on some grief, I've been soft capping them up until now with the plan of making the jump strait to a maxed pair that works well together...which is my problem right now as my most covered characters don't necessarily play too nice together (Blade, Captain America, Human Torch & Falcon) so I was holding off on pulling the trigger but your path over the last year is encouraging me to make the most of what I have & learn to play 2 of those characters together no matter if the synergy between them is not completely ideal...just like you did in your early days of land.
I am having a lot of fun with this game every day...and I've put the time & effort to get better faster. I guess that it is the lesson to be learned here for everyone who started the game in recent months...it is still possible to transition into a higher level of competition...but it won't just be handed to you...so roll up your sleeves & go get it! Exploit all the edges you can get as you said whether it's grinding PvE or whatever else works for yourself...and grow up your roster a step at a time.
Thank you again for your constructive contribution mate... Cheers!
EDIT: Just to clarify my situation further, I also balance life into the equation without problems (wife, work, family, etc.)...I did not stop living my life to get here in that span of time.0 -

Yeah, Punisher and Hulk are the most redundant characters you can get. Though at least Hulk was able to tank two colors.
I'd push Blade/Falcon or Torch/Falcon in your pairings. When I can't use Daken in PVE, I've been using Blade/Psy/Falcon instead. All that matters is getting 1 attack tile out, then the rest is getting strike tiles and buffing them.0 -

I use blade / torch / falcon / daken almost exclusively in PvE for a huge majority of the grind, and sub in punisher for torch when he's worn out. I don't even have that high level of a torch (although he's maxed covered just recently), and you can mow down teams pretty quickly. Hitting for 700 - 110 on each match makes for a quick bout. (plus whatever DOT tics are going, and AP powers)0 -

We used to play candy crush and it just got too crazy. I don't remember any story to Candy Crush though so she should love MPQ as the PVE actuall has a story. It is a bad story but it has one!!!0 -
Impressive achievement. I bet your roster is still better than a lot of non F2P players that have been playing the same time0

I'm about 3 weeks later than the OP and currently at day 344. Like the OP, I have never spent a cent in this game since the beginning. Not even for the roster slots at the early stage.
The journey here has been interesting and my roster at this time has a level 215 TGT 5/2/5, level 200 XF 5/5/3, 18 maxed level 3*, 9 at level 140 or above, Hood which I purposely left at 137 and 4 3* are at level 100. The only char not at that level is of course Squirrel Girl. Other than SG, only Luke Cage and Gamora would be missing covers as soon as FFW is over. My Fury is fully covered and my Dino will be as well when I reach the anniversary mark. Give it another 2 months and I expect that most of my 3* would be maxed except for the 3-4 newest characters.
To reiterate a key point that would really help people along is that you shouldn't be afraid to spend HP on missing covers that would give you an edge. On my mpq journey, there have been 3 chars that I have spent HP on. The first happened in 2* land during an era where 2* covers did not rain down from the skies (I mean from PvP). It was also before True Healing was introduced to the game. It took me well over a month (around day 40+) before I finally got a blue OBW. I spent 2k HP on her almost immediately. That expenditure immediately brought the aspect of healing into the picture for me giving me a slight edge when compared to using mnmags / cstorm prior to this. Shortly after, they started raining down the 2* which was a bit of a bummer. Then True Healing was introduced. This was when I spent HP on my 2nd character - Daken. 2 covers for 2500 HP made him usable for me. Since he tanked green at the time, he paired significantly well with a number of characters especially Thor. Then the era of 3* passed and it was time to enter 4* land. 6 covers for Thor from the PvE + season rewards (only used 2 from the seasons as I messed up thinking it was yellow still for the last season when they had changed it to red) still meant 7 missing covers. Picked 4 up from placement / progression and then spending HP on another 2 made her into a very usable 5/2/5 configuration. So, I have spent HP on every single phase of my journey but I'm still F2P as the HP spent was from PvP / PvE. I did not utilize shields until very much later into the game preferring to be around during the final moments of PvP and pushing then instead of spending the HP on shielding. OBW guaranteed continued gameplay before True Healing and Daken helped a lot after that change was introduced. So, the HP went toward purchasing essential covers instead of shielding. Today, there are options for continuous gameplay for both the 2* and 3* players which combined with time slices makes this strategy still a workable strategy.
My first 3* to be maxed was Punisher at 3 months into the game. That made Punisher + OBW my PvP team even after I managed to fully level a few other characters including 3* Cap. At a time when people were using Punisher + Cap for PvP, I still preferred my OBW option. Of course, this transition option may not be as good today as compared to when I was using it.
Another thing that greatly helped me in my journey was being a part of my alliance which has always been strong since the introduction of alliances. Very often I would only be able to get 1 of the 3* covers from PvP on my own and it was only with the alliance did I manage to get another cover. Looking at the alliance section of the forum, a top 100 alliance only has a requirement of 500 pts. Between tanking appropriately and continuous play, getting to this level really isn't as hard as it may seem. Too many transitioners focus on PvE instead of PvP which they really shouldn't. If they focused a bit more on PvP, they could probably meet the requirements of a top 100 alliance even if the alliance doesn't do so well in PvE. Getting into an alliance that makes 3 top 100 PvP per week is better value than getting into 1 that is top 50 for PvE but sucks at PvP.
Commercial break:A-Force is currently looking to fill a spot. If you're interested in joining an alliance that has been top 25 since the beginning, do drop me a PM. We do have a minimum requirement of 600 per PvP if you're a transitioner and 800 otherwise.
To wrap things up, I'm almost a year into the game and have nearly maxed all my 3* chars. In 2+ months, they would all be maxed. I've shared a couple of tips which hopefully would have been worth the read and help people on their own journey in this game.0 -

She makes her own little stories out of chocolate and such, and prefers that over people attacking each other. (Though I showed her Squirrel Girl's ability descriptions and she was intrigued.)0 -
hi thanks for sharing and i respect your post, but it's not quite relevant to a 3-6 month (newbie) player today. Why?
you started off back in the days with much lesser heroes, lesser 3-4*s and way lesser player base with maxxed 4* X forces and Goddess Thor. Thus it might have been easier to make t25/t100 for a cover without or less shielding.
additionally, congrats on your incredible token pull luck. The percentages do not always work the way you described. I have hoarded plentiful of heroics/pve/standards and i have not gotten a single IW or Thorina from these. My recent hoard of 30 heroics were all 2*s. What can i say.
You are up there now because of your early move advantage. Enjoy it. It's just not going to be same for new joiners today.
NB: i am in day 185.0 -

I don't know that I ever made top 100 back in the transition without shielding. That was my point. I had to start using HP to shield to win the covers I wanted. Trying to play at the end of an event, you just take too many attacks. When I was trying to win the Punisher and Hulk covers that got me maxed or near maxed, I started using 3-4 shields, so I was slow hopping in between.
And token percentages have lots of swings, as do all percentage chances. Everyone's gone long streaks of empty Heroics. But that doesn't mean you should abandon them. You can go 50 Heroics in a row with no gold pulls, but then get 4 out of the next 10. That's how variance works, and you have to trust the overall percentages. If you open a hundred Heroic tokens, and only get 8-9 golds, that's completely within normal ranges. But working to pick up 35 Heroic/Event tokens is still better than only gaining 30. Short runs, even a couple hundred Heroic tokens, are still a small sample size. It's the long run that counts.0 -
Jeez, Scottee, your story is eerily similar to mine. I won't bore everyone with the details of my roster, but I will say that I place nicely in every event I put effort into. This forum has been instrumental and your advice is both sound and reasonable. I do hope other transition players can reap the benefits of your measured words.0

Seems like a lot of us around the 1 year mark have similar stories. Punisher rained down on us then lcap and lthor not long after. I won so many covers off of just pun/obw or LT/obw before true healing. Anyway, nice read and good tips.0

additionally, congrats on your incredible token pull luck.
NB: i am in day 185.
I mean, it is harder for us newer players than it was for players who have to deal with vaulting, diverse 3* pulls, more established opponents, etc
But the two aren't worlds apart. Transitioning is transitioning - you're disadvantaged compared to the people who are not. His strategies - that he so kindly shared - still work and are still applicable. That information still helps you achieve what he achieved.
There's no need to be sort of rude or try to belittle his achievement.0 -

I'll also add to that guy, we're talking about 7-8 months of tokens and it was always easier to get a 4* than any given 3* nowadays (and often then too) because that 2.7% for a 4* was split between just xforce and IW. Iirc, xforce was buffed right around when fury was added to tokens, but if not, then maybe there was another couple months with 3 4*.0
