Self or Team Damaging Powers
Hello, everyone. First time poster, long time lurker, but this recent trend of self- or team-damaging powers got me in the mood to put up my thoughts.
Juggernaut's Headbutt, Hulk's Smash and now this Ares' Sunder power. What the...?
Are we controlling a well-trained, veteran group of superheroes...or a bunch of bumbling rookie buffoons? Is this the Marvel Universe...or The Tick's?
If this is a $$-grab on the developer's part to sell more health packs, why stop there?
I'm sure I could create dozens of these for them, if the devs haven't thought of them yet. I would just make all powers work against the heroes wielding them. Why not, right? It's their own fault for using their skills so recklessly and foolishly.
Heroes? Bah.

• Captain America's blue/red shield throws, upon their return, accidentally hit the team, too, causing collateral damage. Further, his yellow, depicted as reflecting bullets, inadvertently cause 20% of them to deflect to the team. Practice your aim, Cap.
• Modern Storm's Hailstorm is uncontrollable. 50% of the resultant strike tiles cause damage to the enemy, 50% go against the team. Same with Classic Storm's Wind Storm. More Danger Room training for Ororo.
• Thor's Call The Storm and Thunder Strike are too widespread and he's not used to them yet. Team suffers electrical damage as well as the enemy. Additionally, Iron Man, Wolverine and Captain America take added damage for wearing armor, having metal bones and carrying an alloy object around during a thunderstorm. Gods can be so careless.
• Iron Man 40's Ballistic Salvo hasn't had the homing upgrade added yet. 30% of the missiles hit the team by mistake. Stupid Jarvis.
• Spider-Man's too new to the game of heroics and not used to his web-shooters. All Tied Up unintentionally stuns a randomly-selected team member, as well. Practice makes perfect.

This is by far one of the funnest posts I have read. Thank you good sir.0

I recently posted in another thread how much I wait MORE of similar stuff -- as long as they fit the character's nature.
Not necessarily damage, but drawbacks applied to powers for balance. (Writing this I realize my own fallacy, looking at IM40. He starts looking better.
In other games we have even more: team composition adjustments. Say in Eador if I put together good and evil characters they will get serious morale decrease. While uniform team gets a bonus. Opponent adjustments too -- characters could get bonus to fight his natural enemy and malus fighting himself or supposed friends. Sure I expect to have some tools to manage interactions to my benefit if I'm smart enough.
If all character's ability does is 'deal (X+Y*lvl^2) damage, it gets boring. Do you want just a painted PQ game? I'd prefer to use more and more of Marvel universe soaking in. The story missions are created on that vectors, the characters should be too, the more the better.0 -
MPQ lacks a rocks-paper-scissors aspect to it's gameplay like many other games do. So, I think the negative consequences are just a variation of that.
So, if you have a character that does damage to yourself, or gives the other team some AP, you need to use your brain and think of just what those consequences will be.
Nothing wrong with making the user think a bit more.0 -
Dude, he's headbutting people. Some of them are really, really strong people. And you're surprised he gets hurt? Your complaint is ridiculous.0

Agreed. If he has to worry about a concussion every time he runs thru walls or blasts thru opponents, maybe he should rethink this whole headbutt thing.
Open a hot dog stand or something safer.0 -

So that's who's selling me those rip off 50 health hot dogs in the city?0 -
Ares and Hulk make sense thematically: if Hulk uses Smash too soon after an Anger trigger he hurts your guys (something about how much you like him when he's angry...), and Ares presumably would just as soon die as let an opponent live (and, as a God, will presumably regenerate later, anyway). Juggs only makes sense cause he's one star and they needed to give him a cool ability...thematically, headbutt damage shouldn't really stop him...
The abilities in and of themselves are cool, but they really increase the value of healing (which I wouldn't mind seeing on more than two characters in the future).0 -
what if spidey's yellow misfires and heals the opposing team?0
-
Man I would love a Tick Puzzle Quest0
-
Loki could have a power that is able to sometimes divert healing on his team or coming damage to the opponents'.0
-
Heroes? 2 of the characters you listed are villians traditionally. The third is a character known for massive recklessness and property damage.0
