Why I wont spend money on this game.

First off, Im not a cheap gamer who wants things for free. I am a console gamer so I am used to spending $50+ on game that only lasts a few days.

I enjoy this game, I do. It has many fun aspects. But my problem is the randomness of the covers. I hate having one color and never having the luck of pulling the others. Im not good at pvp so I will never get rank high enough to earn many of them. So I am completely frustrated.

I refuse to pay money for something I may not get or want. I dont know how any times I get covers I have or dont even want at all. Take a first person shooter and you pay for guns, but keep getting the pistol when you want an rpg. I simply will not pay for a random chance. Thats too much like gambling for me.

All I want is an offline stand alone game I can buy outright and be done. Heck even if I have to purchase characters specifically that is fine as long as I get to choose the ones I want. I dont want the star system, I want any cover allowed to be leveled to cap. Again this is offline no pvp so balancing is not that big of an issue or worries of the required team to win pvp.

A game like this would get my money instantly. But till then, I will be keeping my money.

  • Thank you for telling us why you won't be spending money on this game. For the last seven weeks I've been thinking, "is gpman gonna spend money on this game? He has to right? Maybe he has a reason that's super important and I sure hope he shares that with us!!!"

I would argue that random chance adds to the excitement of collecting all the covers. You may get nothing or something you really needed which always puts smile on my face. It is a well tested method similar to opening boosters in Magic the gathering. Also the random chance means you can't just instantly buy yourself to the top which adds longevity of the game.

    LOL, so good.
  • I understand the frustration but the randomness is the only way they can protect their business model unfortunately. There are some things you can do to help yourself though:

    1. Keep an eye out for 'guaranteed' packs on the store. They come up quite often and might/might not be featuring a hero you want.

    2. In PVP, game the system to finish higher. If you really want a higher placed reward don't join straight away because you will be ranked with uber competative players going for 1800 progression rewards. Bide your time and enter towards the end of the tournament to fetch yourself an easier bracket. You can win the thing with 600-700 points.

    3. If you want to spend some money on the game but don't want the randomness consider buying skills. It may seem pricey at first but it guarantees you what you want. This is a half solution though because obviously you need at least 1 cover in the colour of the skill in the first place.

    4. Take advantage of the PvE events, often they have great progression rewards that reward covers and plenty of tokens so you can roll the dice for free.

    5. Always gift items to abuelo, it increases your chance of 3* cover draws. True story.

  • It's hard to have a console gamer mentality and try to play these games. When you play a console game, you can sit down with it over a weekend and powergame it over the next 72 hours and completely let it own your soul. You get to experience everything, see it all and dominate the game.

But these types of F2P games are completely different. They are made to be played for a few hours a day (sometimes longer sessions) for MONTHS. They are intentionally crafted this way to cause the impatient people to spend their money to 'speed up the experience'.

I think all of us would rather play a self-contained, single player experience that lets us all explore the game mechanics at our own pace for a fixed cost.

But that's not what this is. Maybe if this is super-successful, it could morph into something like that (like Puzzles and Dragons was able to do with their 3DS title ::hint hint DEVS::).
  • The free play to business model can be very very successful too. Check out what King has done with Candy Crush

  • You could just spend money to upgrade covers once you have it. If you're trying to get any particular cover you don't have, that's going to be rather costly.

Totally off topic but i wonder how many people are like and me might end buying a 3DS purely to just play PAD on it ( and of course pokemon but that's just an extra bonus)

On topic: I cant blame the user for his feelings I know i Absolutely LOVED PQ1 and PQ2 while not AS good was still a rather fun game and I'd totally buy a "boxed" game in a heartbeat.
  • I bought a 3ds just to play ocarina of time and I already have it for the 64. totally worth it.

Heh. I did QA for Ocarina at Nintendo.
  • QA? What is that? (I tried googling what QA was and I got Qatar or Quality assurance...I'm hoping its the latter)
  • It's quality assurance or game testing.

Which I've heard can be awesome and terrible. All in the same day.

    First of all, you're cheap.

They programmed a game. They run it on servers. You get to play that game. But you demand all that for free. That has no value to you whatsoever because you are entitled to it apparently.

And then you will only give them money if you get something extra. Instead of paying them for being able to play the game. That is the very essence of cheap.

I agree 1000%. I don't expect people to drop hundreds of dollars or even twenty dollars For that matter. But to write a post about the reasons why you won't spend money on this, while also not suggesting an alternative to the games lack of appealing purchases for you, is pointless and self absorbed.
