Is it worth doing an event when it starts?

I played the Hunt events pretty quick and blew through them yesterday.

My friend came over to watch the Colts game and in two hours during commercials he already had 5,000 points... Something that took me all day.
Is this common for all PvE events? Is it not worth it at all... Even in your own bracket... To actually attempt more than one mission?

Comments

  • I finished first of my bracket in the event that ended today. I entered a few hours after the start by doing the first node, and waited until 2 hours before the end to start doing the rest. If you enter very early, you might get a more competitive bracket, that's when I wait a few hours to enter, I assume there's more random people.

By doing the rest of the nodes 2 hours before the end, you take advantage of rubberbanding. I didn't even have to do all nodes to be first, for example I don't have bag women.
  • In PvE events, it is generally advantageous to do the event immediately after the first set of sub brackets. This is because the earlier you do it, the more likely you'l get a hardcore player in your bracket, who is less able to get a large number of points due to rubberbanding. You literally have no chance against the random casual that gets the full X10 modifier for every mission, and while you can't predict when that guy is going to enter, by definition casuals shouldn't be entering a bracket the moment it's up.

You should always redo all the missions as close to the end of tournament as possible, though do allow time for health pack to refresh if you plan to be doing the ultra hard missions. Your characters will go down at some point and you want to have enough time to get healed if necessary.
  • It's worth it if you want to play a lot. There are some people who do. As for me, no thanks.

It really all depends on how serious you are about getting the top rewards in a given sub-event, or even the main event.

For the main event: Someone can take advantage of rubber banding like your friend did and place very respectably and get some decent rewards along the way just by playing a reasonable amount during the event. They may even win a sub-event or two because their rubberbanding will load all their points into a smaller number of sub-events.

If you're aiming for the upper tiers in the main event, however, grinding it out (completing subs once they start, once in the middle, and once more in the last hour or two before they close) is the only way to compete. Your buddy might get 5000 for just rubberbanding, but you will end up with let's say 5072 points for grinding. It's a small gap, but that's what makes the different in the top 10 spots for a main bracket. Grinding all three subs is the only way to ensure a top finish in the main bracket, but you will miss out on the highest tier rewards in most of the sub-brackets, since rubberbanding will ensure that those who are joining the event late will place above you in those.

For a sub-bracket: If you try to push in all three subs at once, you will get a good, but not top tier reward in each. For the Hunt, I tend to pick one sub that I know I can grind 2-3 times (I tend to go for Florida) without disrupting the rest of my life. The other two I only clear each mission once. This allows me to place highly in my chosen sub (for the last Florida I hit top 2 for 500HP), but as the event wears on it gets harder and harder to hit the top tiers in subs even with this strategy because there are players who are joining the overall event for the first time who will just bury you with their rubberbanding for that sub (even though they're going to be behind you in the overall point count).

So, look at the rewards for all 3 subs and the main bracket, decide what you're aiming for, and plan accordingly. For example, I have my Punisher in decent shape for now, so for this event I'm using the sub-event strategy to try and land some good HP rewards (not too bullish on Ares so far), knowing that I will probably drop in the main rankings for only grinding one sub per round. Last time Punisher was brand new so I abandoned the top tier sub rewards and just grinded everything to try and land his covers in the main bracket.

Whichever path you take, doing them right away won't hurt, since there's plenty of time for points to refresh, but making sure you grind sub-events right before they close is essential for good results. Hope this was coherent and helpful!
  • My strategy for the sub brackets is that unless there's a good chance to finish in top 10, I just settle for the heroic token prize. Of course I still got burned on the first bracket when I was like #9 and fell out of top 10 with 1m left, but that's the risk you got to take.

I guess I don't understand. The majority of missions in the sub events get a red checkbox, meaning I cannot do them again.
What do you mean by playing 2-3 times? Are you referring to the actual full refresh when the event closes and reopens?

The repeatable missions refresh their points every 8 hours.

8 hours from last played or from the event start/last reset?

8 hours from when you've played it.
